7.3L safe EGT range??

I've read a lot of conflicting opinions on the safe EGT range on the 7.3. I was always under the assumption that it was pretty similar to the other diesels but that it had a worse effect on the 7.3 if you stayed above 1300* for very long. I'm hoping you guys can help me clarify what temp range I should be comfortable with and at what point I should back off of the throttle.

Most will they you 1250 degrees and that is where I keep it under. Short busts to over that, like when letting it all out is okay, but I wouldn't let it go very long at all, especially while towing. Pistons start to melt along with other things as well. Stock you shouldn't have a problem unless something is wrong with the truck. If your tuner keeps you EGT's over that have him redo it or change tuners. Tow tunes should not go over 1250, or I like 1100 myself. Race tunes our different, but the more you go over the more damage you can do over time.

1250* is the magic number.

On a 100% healthy truck... with reputable tuning... you should never see it get that hot unless deliberately trying to do so.

I can barely get to 1200* on my truck pulling my camper up the biggest hill in our area with my foot on the floor.

If you are seeing high egt's... start looking for exhaust/boost leaks.

ok. I haven't seen it get over 1100 yet. even standing on it on the extreme tune. with the 4" turbo back it runs pretty cool. my last truck was an 04 6.0 and it ran considerably hotter than this truck. even when it was stock. I straight piped it and ran and edge evolution and that just made it worse. it could easily hit 1250 empty even on the 15hp economy tune. I haven't had a chance to tow with it yet, but I'm hoping to soon. I had read in a couple places that 1300-1400 was ok, and that 1400+was ok for very short periods. but then in the latest issue of Diesel Power I was reading an article about adding power with some Banks parts and it mentioned 1250 as being the "danger zone" for a 7.3

Think of it like this.....

Wave your hand over a candle.... It doesn't burn
Now, hold your hand over the same candle and let me know what happens.

You're worried about heat soak not peak numbers....

I ran mine between 1000-1175 for a few hours in west KS and east CO driving into a 55 mph headwind towing around 6000 lbs. It stayed in the 4 digit range most of the time and nothing melted down. That wind made my 6K load feel like 20K and poor mileage proved it.

John hit it right. Driving along at 6-700, nail it to 1300-1400 for a few seconds, okay. Driving along at 1100, nail it, not so much.
