Just got the cam chain out and it is obvious the crank was turning and the cam was not. My son said this happened at idle or while he was trying to start the engine. From what I have read this is a low compression engine...but. Does anyone have experience with throwing the cam chain and not doing other damage?

 

I have seen them with no valve damage . I would put a timing set on and see how it goes . Just my 2 cents ....

 

The 5.0 is not a interference engine. No damage can occur in that engine if the valves hang open and the piston keeps moving.

 

I have only seen valve damage in one single 302 engine, in stock form.
So, it is extremely rare, but can happen. The chances of it occurring, is about the same as hitting the jackpot at lotto.......

 

Thanks everyone. The gear set/chain and new water pump arrive tomorrow from Summit so we will see.
