160$ for diagnosis only?

Cost is 100$+tx at home near Montreal. 160$US near Chicago! Does this sound right or am I getting overcharged because I'm a tourist?

We need more information... If it was just to plug in a scan tool and prepare a diagnosis, I would say that would be pretty stiff.. If it's pulling off a cylinder head to have it pressure checked, that would be cheap...

Already had code P00014 from home dealer. Code came back during trip.

I understand dealer doing his own diagnostic. As far as he told me it was just scan tool; he'll call me later to approve further work.

Also home dealer did not seem convinced this would be covered by powertrain and extended warranty. VCT timing issue. Bought the truck used so I don't have all oil change records.

It sounds about close to normal for the area. Where are you near Chicago?

Isn't there a TSB for this on the 6.2? Was it performed? How many miles on the truck?

In Illinois I'd be surprised if they didn't have one guy to plug in the tool, another to run it, a third to looks at the results, and a team supervisor for all three of them

But seriously though, the flat diagnostic fee I've seen before is either 1 or 1.5 shop hours at the full rate. Neighborhood of $100/hr seems common enough, so maybe they hit you with 1.5 hours at shop rate. If they do repairs it should roll into whatever they charge you for that, I've never paid a diagnostic fee AND a repair fee for the same job.

Completely different vehicle, but for my daughter's Mini Cooper, just the diagnostic test was $110.00, plus I think they charge a minimum "labor" charge. We had several items repaired on the car and the labor was just shy of the parts cost. It sucks, but....

Dealer waved the fee after they found it was covered by powertrain/emissions but could not get the part on time.

Another dealer changed VCT solenoid but code came back. Changed cam phaser and all is good now. No charge and they got me a rental while they worked on the truck. Thanks Ford.
