MAGNAFINE FILTER ON 4R100

I have seen this issue discussed pro and con but don't know if there was ever a final word on it. IE: from Mark.
I am finally getting to the 6.0 trans cooler and had intended to use the 1/2" Magnafine in line filter which has a built-in pressure bypass should it get clogged. Planned to install it on the outlet side of the Derale thermostat to the trans return line.
Issues that were of concern were added restriction in general and possible clogging of the filter.
Any new input?

Mike

The problem I had with them was leaks. The seal on these plastic housing magnafine filters did not hold up for me for the 30,000 miles between changes. I was getting the parts for a spin-on filter setup for the trans to replace this when I sold the rig.

The filter's recommended replacement / life cycle is 12 months or 15k miles. Other than that, I have not seen nor had any issues when I used on my vehicle until I added an external filter return filter system.

Perhaps if some have clogged filters and are maintaining them at the suggested interval cycle, they have a Transmission Issues and/or a Cooler issue.

Other than the above, Ford did recommend their use anytime the transmission required rebuilding via a TSB to dealers. Currently that TSB is superseded as new Coolers are shipped with the remanufactured units now.

My understanding of the TSB is Ford installed them on the return side of the air cooler when folks came in with blown transmissions. This happened a lot. The thinking was the filter would protect the newly installed warranty trans from any flotsam and jetsom left in the cooler from the dead trans. On a fresh install with no debris in the system I'd install pre-radiator, or pre-cooler if you do not have the radiator cooler. Then the filter will protect those components too. Install where it is easy to replace and monitor for leakage.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just need one more fitting for the 3/8 hose to 1/2 MPT on the Derale inlet side.
