6.4 diesel boost question

Hey everyone, so I got my new 08 450 out for the first time yesterday. I was carrying our arctic fox camper (4k lbs) and a car trailer with 2 quads (4k maybe). The truck did amazing for a stock truck. I drove the passes and the truck didn't even know they were there. Did one pass in cruise control at 65 and it just flew up it.

The only question I had was on boost. Now I am just using the stock guage, but it said at one point it was boosting 36-38ish. Should the truck boost that high when it is stock? Overall, very happy with the truck and performance.

41 psi is what it is capable of. Stock boost guage is pretty accurate.

Thanks. Not used to boost that high. Neither my 7.3 or 6.0 saw boost like that. Good to know. Thanks for the info.

Yes the 6.4 engines make unnecessary boost lots.
I believe it has more to do with emissions than operation.

Consider the 6.7 which makes over 400 hp and might hit 30 psi if your lucky, and has basically the same engine features. Big difference being the DEF fluid so less EGR is used on the 6.7.

Mine is only a 350, but I was always annoyed with the crazy boost all the time. My 7.3 made like 3-5 psi on the highway empty, and the 6.4 would sit around 20 psi sometimes.
Because I have a tuner, and exhaust is non-factory, I disconnected my arm going from the turbo controller, so it no longer actuates, just acts like an old fashioned "dumb" turbo.
Now it runs 1-4 psi on the highway, and EGT's haven't been an issue.
Downside is, the boost takes a second to develop if you punch the throttle. Also, under 2000 RPM, it is laggy and slow at building boost. If you hammer the throttle, it downshifts, builds boost, and it's gone like a shot lol.
Worked for me, but certainly not even worth a try with stock tune and DPF on.
I might put a pressure actuator on the arm, to help it build a bit more boost under low loading, just to help it have more low end power, but overall I'm happier than letting the computer control the turbo and having massive boost all the time.
