WHAT HAVE I GOT

I need you guys to take a W.A.G. at what I am running, I have a 1980 302 SMOG motor but it has a double sump oil pan & a C-6 transmission (bell housing and transmission case is one piece ) all the old owner could tell me is that it came out of a 4 door sedan as one unit, could this be a state police motor ?

That could be out of just about any of the full sized cars from the era. The data plates and casting marks will give you hints, but not the precise vehicle. I have something similar in my son's 66 Mustang. We didn't really know what it was from until I needed a water pump. The auto parts store guy (old-timer) matched the pump up for me....and said that if I ever needed any engine parts to say that I had a 79 Ford LTD Brougham with a 302. I think the water pump is one of the few really unique parts that would point you in the right direction.

You could put in an aftermarket cam and timing gear arrangement to de-smog your engine a little. Some of the smooth idle cams are essentially a stock cam from the pre-smog era. A good timing gear with straight-up timing will eliminate the late cam timing used to reduce nitros oxides. I went that way on the 66 Mustang and in the 351w that I put in the 52 F1. Both run pretty well!
