Oil pan gasket - silicone sealant - yes or no?
My oil pan on my 4.9L straight 6 is leaking. I went to Mid-Five auto parts store here in Livonia and they sold this to me:
Felpro/Oil Pan Gasket (OS34601R) | AutoZone.com
Per the Ford 96 service manual, it says to:
3. Apply black silicone rubber F4AZ-19562-B or equivalent to parting lines between rear main bearing cap and cylinder block, and between engine front cover and cylinder block.
4. Apply suitable pressure-sensitive adhesive to cylinder block flange and oil pan gasket.
However, the instructions for the aftermarket gasket say this:
IMPORTANT: This molded rubber silicone gasket must be installed DRY without any chemical adhesive.
So, which do I do? My thought is that if I were using the original Motorcraft gasket, then I should follow the instructions per the manual. But since this is an aftermarket gasket, I'm guessing the gasket manufacturer knows what is best. What do you all think?
Also, in instruction #3 above, it mentions "parting lines between rear main bearing cap and cylinder block, and between engine front cover and cylinder block." What does that mean? Are there indentations or lines that need to be filled with silicone to prevent leaks?

I changed two of these oil pan gaskets on my '93 I6 and didn't use any sealer, but I used the silicone gaskets. One tip tie the gasket to the pan with four zip ties - one at each corner, to hold the gasket in place, then start the remaining bolts. Once the bolts are started, cut the zip ties and pull them out and start the last four bolts.

One in each corner where the block meets the timing cover and the rear main. No other RTV anywhere else
