Clear coat over oil based?

I have a trailer frame that I had reinforced and then I painted it with Rustoleum oil based paint. I thought it would be a good idea to have a clear coat sprayed on it to protect the paint before I put decking on it. A couple body shops told me their clear coat won't work with oil based non automotive paint. Is there something out there that I could use or should I just let it be and put the deck on it? Thanks for any help.

I think you can use any oil based paint but you will have to surface sand 1st.

Did you put hardener in the paint you put on? Usually will hold up nicely if you do.....I bought some of that rustoleum at Wally World to do a deck table. I have some hardener I got at rural king for their oil based paint but haven't had a chance to spray it yet. I never noticed if they had clear coat in oil base.......

I didn't put any hardener in it; just rolled it straight onto the trailer from the can.

I sprayed a trailer with oil based paint I got at Lowe's. I didn't use hardener and sprayed 3 coats on only waiting about 20 mins between coats.....it took about a year sitting in the sun to dry completely lol. After reading the directions you are only supposed to put on one coat every 8 hrs.....
