Is it possible to find a new exhaust control valve? Or just the thermostat part?
The thermostat spring is missing from mine, so the valve is alway open. I have been having some trouble with faulty acceleration from idle when the engine is cold. I think the exhaust control valve is supposed to help with fuel delivery at cold engine temperatures.

 

Don't know of anyplace that has a Heat Riser valve for a Y-Block but perhaps you can find another to fit. Maybe from a FE?

 

FoMoCo did not supply the thermostatic spring by itself for the 292, it was only furnished with the valve.

In my experience, they generally rusted either open or closed. If yours is free, you could rig a manual choke cable to operate it remotely. Personally, I'd invest in a good thermostat, and leave it open.
If rusted closed, you force 1/2 of the exhaust gas to pass through the crossover in the intake manifold.

The valve is free and the weight keeps it open. The spring on the thermostat would keep it closed until the engine heated up enough. It is a failsafe device.

 

You cannot buy the spring. You were touted a source for a replacement. I suggested a manual operation alternative.
YOu have 3 choices.
do nothing
buy a replacement & install it
rig a workaround
and I suppose, you could take it out altogether. So 4 choices I can think of.
The ones I have seen have a weight that tends to open the valve. The spring gets WEAKER when warm, I think it is a bi-metal, and closes the valve with not much force when cold.
You are lucky it is free to move. Most are rusted into one position.
A 5th choice would be to scour junkyards for another valve. I have nothing else to add.

 

The spring keeps the valve closed to warm the intake manifold until the spring heats up and then it relaxes to the open position.

Well you posted that as the spring gets warm it closes the valve. I think that is backward. The valve is supposed to be held closed when the engine is cold and as the engine and the spring warm up the valve opens. I was trying to point that out without being rude. Did I get that wrong?

 

My error. Corrected to note the spring gets weaker when warm, and allows the weight to open the valve.
