Anyone see any red flags about this Expedition?

2005 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4WD

It's a very clean car inside and out. Looks as though it were very well liked. 2 owner car with all records since #2 got her in 2007. It has the sealed transmission, which I'm told to avoid, and was rebuilt 25,000 miles ago.

The only thing I'm really concerned with is the transmission...but I'm a little confused about which transmission was particularly problematic. I'm told it's the 6r75 but this one has a 4r75e. Are the 4r75's problematic?

As far as used cars go everything else looks good. I'm just curious what you guys think about it.

We're mostly going to be using it for a family hauler and basic commuting. We don't have much to tow and I already have toys...we won't be abusing it much I wouldn't think.

I wouldn't worry about that tranny, as you do have the 4r75e. Just make sure the fluid changes on it are current.
You have the infamous 2 piece spark plugs with the 3 valve heads that have a tendency to break off when trying to replace.
Many posts here if you search.
Buy the new upgraded units that are essentially one piece replacements.
Check the maint records on these first.
Many will preheat and use an impact wrench to remove. Many options here but all Expy's are a bear to change.
Good luck.

Thanks! All the maintenance is up to date and the owner has receipts for the transmission having been overhauled about 25k ago.

How many miles on it? Plugs needed to be changed out at 100k and hopefully the 1piece type.
Other things like coil pak issues and egr elbow replaced would be helpful to know.
If rear air suspension, maybe the boots replaced too.

<125k on it now. I will inquire about the plugs but I have seen that dealt with before and am hoping it's something I can tackle competently.

Sometimes you just use your gut, who you're dealing with and how much confidence you build during those discussions, etc.

Good luck and hope it works out well.

Oh yeah I know most of it is common "buying a used car" stuff...you can't have a guarantee.

I just want to make sure there's nothing particularly common about these things that, while not immediately evident, will eat us up.

The one is a 2 owner car and the guy has ALL the service records since he got it in 2007...including the documented tranny overhaul. It's very clean and was obviously a liked car.

Bought a 2004 gator a year ago. The original owner allowed me to take it to a trusted mechanic to go over it with a fine tooth comb. The gator was given a clean bill of health. That 100 bucks was well spent for piece of mind. 20k so far on her and not a lick of trouble. Good luck

Liked, but well cared for might be two different things. I'd wonder why it needed a tranny with only 125k on the clock. There are people here who talk about 300k without anything but regular service.

Agreed, like our's but it's a 4R100. I do wonder too why his 4R75E needed a rebuild after just a relatively few miles?

However, if fixed properly, that should be the last thing to worry about over time.

He said it was "making a funny noise". I'm not sure but the work was done by a reputable shop.

What I mean by well liked is liked well enough to be kept in good shape. He's got receipts for regular maintenance for seven years and its really clean.

Well we bought the thing and are pretty happy with it. It does have some creaks and rattles here and there but is pretty solid. It has the same timing chain rattle at a touch above idle that every 5.4 I have ever dealt with has had. I think we'll be fairly happy with it if the missus can just accustom herself to driving it versus our Grand Prix GT2.

I'm curious now, though, what exactly makes the Eddie Bauer edition so special. Anyone care to enlighten me on the finer points of what I just bought?

I own a 2000 Expedition Eddie Bauer and as far as I can tell, it seems to have all available options for that said year. That may be the difference in these models. I read through the handbook and all of the optional features noted in the book were in/on my truck.

The ugly tannish brown exterior trim?

The missus likes the color...I couldn't care past that.
