Unhappy SENDING UNITS & MYSTERIOUS HOLE

I purchased a 292 long block and I'm happily putting everything back on it but I'm to the point of putting my oil and water temp sending units back on; which is where I need advice.

I've located the bung in the left head for putting in the water temp sending unit but the bung will only accept a 3/8 in dia with 24 pitch threads and my old sending unit is 5/8 in dia with 18 pitch threads.

However, the oil pressure sending unit which should be in the block to the right of where the oil filter is located is not there. Is there an alternative place to put the sending unit?

Then on the right side of the block, in the middle down close to where the pan is, is a hole that goes down into the pan. At first I thought it might be for the dip stick, but I found that hole up towards the front of the engine. So what is this other hole?

What year the 292 is I have no idea.

Good to know. How does one go about plugging up an additional dip stick hole?

Is the extra dip stick hole in the block or pan? For either a small freeze plug
would work. I have seen this used on other engines from the factory. With a
dab of Cat Green or other hi-test sealer it should work for about ever.

The temperature sending bushing was 3/8" iron pipe size for the earlier heads and 1/4" iron pipe size for the later heads. If yours doesn't fit, you have to pull the bushing and put the correct one in. They are available from suppliers. The hole in the middle of the block is for the dipstick for a rear sump pan. The hole in the front of the block is for the dipstick for a front sump pan. Put a freeze plug in the hole you don't use. Dennis

Well, you guys are awesome! So I should be able to find a temp sender unit to fit my 3/8 in hole and I can use a small freeze plug to do away with the extra dipstick hole. Now I just have to figure out where to mount my oil pressure sending unit.

This is a 312 but you can see in the attached photo there are 4 places for a oil pressure sender. Y-Blocks are side oilers so the oil galley runs down the left side of the block. My sender is installed to the rear of the filter. There are three more plugs running forward, just behind the mount bosses, between the mount bosses and the cap I have installed where the crankcase vent would go and just in front of the cap.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You guys really came through for me today!! NAPA was able to give me a 12 Volt Water Temp Sending Unit and now I know where to put my Oil Pressure Sending Unit (I was looking at that earlier today and was thinking that looked like an oil gallery) now Rimrock F1 has confirmed my suspicions. Tomorrow I put the timing chain cover on and my new water pump!
