1981 F250 Transmission cooler?

About a year ago i drove down to Portland from Washington towing a utility trailer 1500 pounds or so and about 3/4 the way there i had a gushing transmission leak that seemed like it was coming from inside the bellhousing, i assumed i blew the forward seal i dropped the transmission and the seal was fine but stupidly i didnt replace it for some odd reason, ever since then i haven't had a single problem with it at all but i haven't taken any trips over an hour or so.

So theres the back story and heres whats going on now, I'm planning on moving from washington to boise so i started getting worried about it making it and after some googling it sounds like my transmission may of been overheating and causing the seal to distort and let forth the torrent of transmission fluid.

Should I install a aftermarket transmission cooler and a temp gauge?
If so anyone have any tips to what to buy and how?

I am assuming you have a C6. You could try the stock replacement coolers from LMC. They have both the lines and cooler. It should be an easy install.

You could also look into a shift kit for it as well. They reduce the slippage inside the transmission, resulting in less friction and heat buildup. Combined, these two upgrades should alleviate your trans overheating fears.

And you may want to consider adding a transmission temp gage. There are a lot to choose from, such as this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-80212/overview/

What is the best location to put the temperature sensor for the transmission a lot of places online say avoid the inline method since its usually give a higher reading. Thanks for all the help so far!

Any auto parts store will have transmission coolers, so there's no need to buy from LMC in KS and then pay shipping charges.
