99-04 Brake Upgrade (F450 or 05-07 Brakes)

Hey guys, It's slow at work today and I've been surfing the web while i do my testing and i came across people talking about upgrading to F450 brakes. I also read that it's possible to swap the 05-07 brakes when larger rims are installed Since I'm nearly due for brakes I figured I'd throw this out there.

Is it possible to swap them? I run 18" rims on my truck and I'm satisfied with the brakes, i originally planned ot just upgrade to HAWK LTS Pads and some slotted rotors but if i can get the bigger brakes why not i guess. I have heard very conflicting things about both swapping 99-04 F450 rotors and calipers and the same with the 05-07 brakes.

I read that the 05-07 was possible but when looking it up i can just find people swapping the axles.

The F450 brake system is very conflicting some say 18" rims others say 19.5" rims. then people says the rotors and calipers have a different offset it's all a big mess when trying to search it. Also i don't have a dually so I'm guessing the rear F450 brakes are out.

I've been reading more and I'm finding more and more people saying the 05-07 swap is possible.

Also they say the F450 swap is possible but you need at least 19.5" rims i have 18 so that's definitely out lol. Looks like I would most likely do the 05-07 swap then.

nojoke you might be able to jump up to the 13+ brakes i read that they increased in size again in the 13+ trucks...wonder if i can run those now lol

EDIT: Maybe not afer looking up rotors for the 2013 and an 07 truck the rotors were the same diameter (13.4" & 13.7")

From what I remember you need the brackets calipers and rotors. And everything bolts up. The limiting factor was the caliper size hitting the rim.

yes 05-07. Might be a knuckle change too then. I do remember it was possible and a few people did it, and wasn't crazy, just swapping parts.

FWIW hawk LTS with new rotors stop quite well.

Good to know man, i may still likely go that route, many people swear by it while I'm reading up on it is that what your running?

I'll dig deeper into the 05-07 swap, it's slow at work since it's the day before a long weekend lol.

Im running r1 concept premiun blanks and hawk LTS 99-04 style. No issues no wants for braking. However I only have 33s.

I decided against the swap because I don't intend on needing the extra braking and now I have 16x9s so they're really out of the question

I also don't really intend to need a lot more braking power especially since my trailer has it's own brakes so i don't really add much to the truck. I am even still satisfied with the stopping power of the stock brakes and pads, they have been changed but with Motorcraft replacements under warranty until i go the truck 40k miles ago. Maybe i will just do that then, i figured it couldn't hurt to pick people brains on the subject.

IIRC the 05-07 swap required the knuckle, caliper, and bracket. The dually brakes required a change to the 19.5" or larger wheels and IIRC was going to require an axle swap or something.

Going to resurrect this because I might be back in an Excursion soon.

So upgrading an '04 or older Super Duty/Ex to F550 brakes really isn't a direct swap? Upgrading to the newer brakes from an '05+ or even '13+ though is doable on older trucks?

I have been researching this also, I posted a thread last year without much response. My overall goal of the upgrade was to change to late model 20" wheels without using spacers. I plan to swap rear axle to a late model which is wider and hopefully get lager brakes plus locking differential, right now I have basically one wheel drive. Front 2004 to 2012 rotor/hub (not 4x4) , caliper and caliper bracket will swap giving me larger diameter and proper offset. It is my understanding that the spindle diameter changed for 2013 but it still uses the same ball joint part numbers so just may need to do a loaded spindle swap. I have not checked tie rod ends to see if that is an issue.

I need a new steering box anyway so it would not be a big deal to swap out all steering components..

Check the Excursion Tech Folder, some members have completely swapped the 05+ front and rear axles.

I've seen the full axle swaps, which are awesome, but it's a bit more than I'd care to do. I really would just like the beefier brakes.

Do you have a 2WD Excursion?
