Did they make any/many '92 Rangers w/AT and 4 cyl?

My brother has '92 Ranger 2WD with 4 cyl and manual trans. I'm an automatic man myself. If this truck ever finds its way into my hands, I would convert to AT. I have yet to see any 4 cyl models with AT at the boneyard. The swap itself does not scare me and I assume I will have to swap in the PCM to run the tranny, but will I have to also swap out the 4 for a V6 to find parts?

The answer is yes. However, most of the people opting for the 4 cylinder are opting for a bare bones stripped down no features truck. That means the luxury of an auto is forgone.

The real question is have many '92 2.3L AT models survived to this day? The engine was ok, and holds up fine, but the trans was garbage.

Thanks, KhanTyranitar. That makes sense. Well, I think I can scrounge up the tranny. Seems to me I did some interchange research on that A4LD and I should be able to find one in something. So if I do find a 4 cyl with AT, I'll grab all the stuff to allow the swap. If I don't find a Ranger so equipped, then I may do the 3.0 Vulcan swap. Unless I win the lottery,

You actually want an A4LD from a '94 Ranger or a '94-'95 Aerostar with a 4.0l. Tougher internal parts. The A4LDs in 2.3l and 3.0l applications are garbage. Then you need a 2.3l bell housing, a torque converter, and a 2.3l flex plate.

Obviously if you can find a 2.3l that already has an auto for donor parts that is good, just remember that the Trans that comes stock is weak.

Thanks, man. That sounds like outstanding advice. So it sounds like the swap pieces can come from a Ranger, but the tranny itself from a later 4.0. Mix and match. Been there, done that. That's the name of the game,
