Thanks redroad. I'm in the process of trying to get my 78 F150 ready for emissions inspection in Denver and having a hard time finding pictures or drawings of what the system might have looked like.

A common upgrade on this motor is the offenhauser intake for those who no longer have emissions inspections on their vehicles .. The key is finding someone who has done the upgrade and is selling the emissions stuff .. I've seen the stuff on craigslist before, even in the last month .. This guy in Loveland probably has what you want https://denver.craigslist.org/pts/4469637132.html .. Also the pull'n-Save off of I-70 by the jail is a good source for parts ..

I do have the air pump / alternator bracket if you don't have that .. Just PM me if you need it

Thanks Redroad. PM sent. My truck has the offy upgrade. Trying to figure out if I have to take it back to stock or can add missing emissions and pass. Any experience?
The other part of my problem is I am not sure exactly what was original to the truck.

If your motor originally came with an air pump it would have it set up like the first pic where the air pump was high and the alternator below .. if the air pump was removel then that part of the bracket would be empty unless the previous owner went through the trouble to track dowwn a bracket that was from a non-air pump motor which was for the alternator only

So today after a few weeks of inconsistent info from my local emissions test shop, local garage and an inability to find a definitive emissions/vacuum diagram for my 78 300, I finally received some good news. I talked to Lyle in the Colorado Emissions Tech Center and he confirmed that the only emissions equipment requirement for my 300 is .....drum roll......a single PCV valve. No egr, no pump, nada. Seems the 6001+gvw 78 F150 300 had "some" equipped with more than a PCV but not "all". So all Colorado requires is a properly installed PCV system and passing the sniff test. So I am off to the emissions shop tomorrow info in hand and fingers crossed I will leave with a pass.

Thanks to Redroad and all the FTE members who have shared their experience and wisdom. Appreciate the help FTE!

That always makes it easy! Mine only requires a sniffer test, and I've been able to get both a stock 1bbl and a Holley 4bbl to pass. I don't think I could do it without a cat though.

Uh huh...

Originally your truck came with PCV, EGR, T/E (smog pump), Evaporative Emission and possibly a catalytic converter.

By 1978, the feds had mandated all this emissions jazz for light trucks (excepting the cat), regardless of where people lived. The cat was required in most light trucks beginning in 1979.

'Course here in CA, all this jazz was mandatory for F100/350's sold new here beginning in 1973, excepting the cat which wasn't introduced until 1975.

You are the definitive source on Fords IMHO ND and appreciate your post.
As I understand it 78 was the last year of the "heavy half 6300gvw f150" which is what my truck happens to be. "Some" of these trucks came with the emissions equipment from the factory you listed but not "all". Some came with only a PCV valve and is why I only need to show that to pass. The "light" F150 6000gvw in 1978 had all the emissions equipment you noted and would be required to pass emissions.
Regardless this is what the Colorado emissions tech center believes to be true, and for my purposes is what I need.

AB, I seem to recall seeing a picture of your cat but don't recall the brand and model or why you chose it. Do you mind sharing that?

If someone had a 73 that had all the smog items mentioned by ND, would there be any benefit to removing any or all of it (EGR, smog pump, ect)? The truck that I am looking at is a 73 (so I assume as ND indicated) it has all these items, but one of the reasons I'm picking up this pre 1975 truck is that it no longer needs smog inspections. Would there be any adnvantage (power, mpg) in removing the "extra" items?

Those items per say aren't going to hurt you until we start talking about the retarded timing set that went with them and the restrictive exhaust .. If you take them off the dizzy will have to be recurved and a straight up timing set would be a wise choice .. If you keep those items on make sure they are functioning as they were intended ..
