Recently acquired a low mileage 2006 3.0 Escape. There are 4X4 stickers on it but it sure seemed easy to get stuck when the GF and I were driving in a muddy patch. I checked the owners manual but couldn't seem to find anything about engaging the 4WD. I assume it's passive and only engages when I'm already stuck!

My "stickers" quote was correct. By "goods out back" I assume you're referring to a rr diff and a longitudinal driveshaft? Simple enough to check for those...

If you believe some of the ad hype, it's supposed anticipate wheel spin before it happens!
Checked underneath and the truck does indeed have "the goods". Heard it called "slip and grip"-no extra grip until it starts to slip, which in my case was too late!
