Ok, here is a question I am sure will have you thinking what is guy doing with an F100.
Have only had the 1963 F100 a week and only drove it home from the seller and then again to fill her up, but that was all, a total of 20 miles.
The question is, is there a trick to changing up gears, should I be at a rev range? Reason I ask, is I found it difficult to change up from 3rd to 4th and back down.
I am waiting for a copy of the shop manual, but not sure if I will find the answer in there.
It sounds like synchro between 3 & 4 is bad or shot, I am no mechanic, but read up on and watched some you tube videos and was going to rebuild my 3 speed- but asked the local transmission guy about rebuilding it and it was $175. So I let him do it. Was awesome came back Painted and all. I am assuming a std transmission? I have the same 1963 truck but with a 223 and 3 on da tree. Love it.
No, I bet it is worn synchro's or something not meshing. They get worn out. You might try draining the oil and putting some new with a little mystery oil or Lucas gear oil treatment- might be sticking and come out of it with use.

I'd also recommend trying this before tearing into it.......
Thanks BarnieTrk, will do, no telling how long it has been since the PO changed the oil in the engine, gearbox and differential, for that matter. I am not planning on tearing down any of those parts, or at least until I know I have to.
Your sig block answers another question for me, and that is whether the T98 can take a the power of a V8 without much work or even replacement. Did you need any work on your 65 to fit a 390FE? I don't usually like to hijack posts, but seeing as this is mine, I thought, what the heck?

I agree on the oil change (and engine oil and coolant). It will not make up for past abuse but it could make it live-able until you decide what direction you are going with fixing up the old girl.
When you drain the oil out of the transmission, drain it through a very fine screened funnel. You may need to keep putting the plug back in the trans if the funnel fills to quickly. Once it is drained out and ALL the old fluid has gone though the screen, check and see if you have tiny bronze colored metal in the screen. If you do and you have quite a bit, the synchro assumption would most likely be correct. This shift issue could also be other things like a worn shifting fork, etc. Ya neva know...Draining and "reading" the oil is very helpful first step. Good luck and enjoy the ride..
That is good advice, always worth asking a question, even if you do think its a stupid one. Straining the oil to detect any worn bits is worth doing, before leaping into a tear down.

The only stupid questions here are the ones that are not asked. Better to seek advice from experience than to waste your hard earned money. Good luck and keep us posted.
