Van turbo w/D66 WW2 wheel...first impression.

I just had it out and logged a bit of data. Empty, made 30psi peak boost with 37 psi peak back pressure. It pull like mad (like broke the tires loose when it reached 2200rpm in OD) after about 2200 rpm when you are really in it. Just going down the road at 60mph, 1700 rpm it makes about .3-.5 psi boost.

But if a tune was written assuming airflow performance from the stock 0.84 housed turbo with a WW2 and the fueling strategy is built on that assumption (ie. quicker spool up but less overall airflow at hgiher RPMs) then it might make sense that until higher rpms the PCM is sending more fuel than the larger slower to spool turbo can provide airflow for and thus it is running rich at lower rpms which creates smoke and heat.
Once the revs build the Van Turbo begins to catch up and will most likely outpace the stocker with regards to airflow and this is where the 1.15 should shine.....but EGTs have already built by then so it might take an extended run at higher boost and RPM to see the EGTs level off or reduce slightly.
Of course if the fueling strategy is much more dynamic than I assumed and the PCM should be able to find a value for the incoming airflow at lower RPMs then I apologize for the 2 mins you read this and I'll go back to my day job......

Steve #2, supplier of great insight. Hopefully this week the Montana connection will come through with a tune for me to try. He did mention about waiting for boost to come on before adding fuel....for a certain member. And that would make sense in my case as well. That and some cool shifting thoughts.
I did tell Steve #1 that Heady was a great beverage and that he should work something out in a trade for some from an east coast member.

No great insights, just trying to put the clues together......I think John was onto the same thing with his experience, I was just trying to make some sense sorta knowing what Dan is probably running for tunes and what they were written for. Not that I am an expert on tuning in the least.....
Like John was getting at......I bet if you hooked that trailer up (assuming you find no leaks), and hit a hill and had that rig in a sweet place around 2500 rpm or so.....your EGTs might level off in the 1000-1150 range making damn fine power. Where the 0.84 would still be climbing in the EGTs and not making the same power under those conditions.
The Van Turbo with its sweet spot in the higher rpm range will just be bit warmer on the EGTs at lower revs......and I wonder if that is where the updated tuning will help a lot.
Of course if that is the case, Dan just started talking himself into a compound setup.....
And yes, Heady is very solid......Hill Farmstead is outstanding but I refuse to wait in 4 hour lines anymore for beer....been enjoying Founders Porter a lot lately as a go to beer.....

I will say, before the 160/30's while pulling 21k up Lookout Pass on the Idaho/Montana border I was running a DP 60T flashed pcm....never had EGT issues, never. Surge, oh yeah. Before the EGT's would get out of control the trans would downshift, rpms and boost come up and EGT went down.
I haven't had the chance to make that grade with any of the recent mods while towing.

The 1.00 ex housing arrived from Beans about 11:30am. What the heck, I figured I'd swap it even though I have to tow tomorrow. Out with the van turbo, swap the 1.00 ex housing on the stock truck GTP38, the D66 compressor from the van turbo, swap that over. 2 hours later I'm washing my hands....sweet! The bellowed uppies are forgiving enough that you can get the locater pin on the baby's butt somewhat started.....pry the bellow up with a bar just enough to seat the turbo on the ped.
After a test drive, I like it better. Boost come on later than the .84 housing, but much quicker than the 1.15 housing. Temps are good and just cruising at 65 I once again have couple psi of boost. WHne you get after it the boost climbs nicely, temps appear manageable and the D66 Wicked Wheel has no whistle at all, Just a faint sound of a fan running. I think I shall like this combo!
