Just got an EEC-IV trouble code readout on my '94 Ranger (4.0litre, 5pd, 4x4) of 522. My trusty Haynes repair manual tells me that code is, "Manual Level Position (MLP) sensor circuit open/ vehicle in gear."
Does anybody know what this sensor is?? I never heard of of of this kind of sensor before. Is this code just letting me know the truck is in gear? I got a similar code on a previous test that told me the a/c was on, so that's why I ask.
While I'm here, does anyone know if there is perhaps a better place to post sensor/ trouble code related questions on this site? By posting this kinda question within the Ranger subdirectory, I wonder if I'm reaching enough folks that might have an answer. I looked at the main truck forum menu, but none of the topics seemed to focus on computer issues specifically.
522 can be either a neutral safety (MLP) for an auto trans or a clutch position sensor for manual trans. Just outboard of the clutch pedal, there will be an electrical connector on the end of the clutch master cylinder. The clutch position sensor will be part of that connector (I think).
This sensor will not let you start your engine without the clutch depressed.
thanks Pat. interestingly my truck wont start/ crank unless the clutch pedal is depressed which I'd imagine would indicate the sensor is working properly.
Right now the engine is not running right (loss of power) and that is why I checked the trouble codes. I wonder if a bad MLP sensor might cause anything like that to happen. Any thoughts?
