1. Had a new rear pinion seal put in last week. Took the truck out for the first time since then and noticed a noise coming from the rear end. Sounds like whining gears or that gear on gear sound. I checked the fluid and that was alright. Any thoughts on what it could be? Should I take it back to the shop and have them adjust something? It's a 9in. rear diff.
2. 302 EFI. There is a loud, very annoying gurgling type sound coming from under the hood. I've narrowed it down to the throttle body. Could this noise be made by the IAC valve? I've had to clean it before to correct a fluctuating idle. The idle is once again fluctuating, so I figure it could be the culprit. I'm just not sure if it could cause this noise. Wondering if anyone knows what could cause that sound.
1. Definitely take it back. If there's something wrong, the mechanic needs to know about it before it ruins anything so he can fix it. If you keep driving it, he can say that it's your fault. Also, if he says there's nothing wrong and it DOES go out, everyone will know it's his fault and he can't put it on you.
2. The IAC won't "gurgle", but if it needed cleaning before, it's probably worn out now, so just get a new one with a LLT warranty. Is the gurgling causing any problems, or is it just the sound that bothers you?
So, I went down there today. They agreed that it shouldn't be making that kind of noise and they agreed to look at it on Wednesday.
One more thing:
Turns out that it wasn't the pinion seal, instead it was the o-ring behind it. They told me that they checked all over town and couldn't find another replacement o-ring, so they sealed it with some sort of silicon stuff. Is this good or bad?
If it stops the leak, it's good. If it doesn't, it's bad for them. Tell them to order the O-ring NOW and have it AT their shop so that if it DOES leak, YOU don't have to wait 2 weeks for it to come in. It can't cost more than a few bucks, and if they order it now, the shipping will only be pennies, instead of having to overnight it later.
Took the truck down today. Turns out it was the "crush sleeve". The old one was shot and apparently over-tightened. They stuck a new one in and I took it up and down the street a few times and the noise was gone. Went back and told them. Didn't cost me a penny.
