C6 overhaul, Building a Dominator

As is par for the course as I get started on a project, life gets in the way to slow me down. Work for the last 7 months has had me working 72+ hrs a week and so I have little time for anything other then sleep. The overtime has help pay for many of my parts on my wish list and that would include all the parts to overhaul my C6 transmission. This overhaul is not a typical overhaul. Most of the time you simply change clutches and gaskets, clean everything up and reassemble. I am in need of beefing up the C6, so much of my original parts will be left on the bench when I am done.

Since this is going to be an atypical overhaul I wonder if there would be anyone interested in a build thread on this C6. Once it is complete it will be the equivalent of a $1500 C6 Dominator, built by many high end transmission shops, on a $1000 dollar budget. Now that I have the parts in hand and know the secrets behind it, I am willing to guess that someone would be able to take this information and build it cheaper.

So with all this being said I will pose the question. Is there enough interest in this project to warrant me making a build thread of the transmission?

Here is a look at what is going to go on during this overhaul.
Install Red Eagle Clutches
Install Kolene steels
Replace R servo
replace intermediate band
replace thrust washers
replace torrington bearings
replace front ring gear and planet set for a steel 6 pinion planet (Stock had a 3 pinion planet and the new one will give me 2.71:1 first and 1.53:1 second gear ratio)
replace Sun gear and shell
replace rear ring gear and planet set for a steel 4 pinion planet (Stock wont work on the new sun gear.)
replace reverse/low Race
Replace reverse/low roller clutch with one from Borg Warner
clean and install Fairbanks Transaction kit into the valve body.

Think that about covers it. I had to get a replacement front ring gear because the first one that I got was not any good, but it will be here on Tuesday. Hope I will be able to start assembly on Wednesday. I have disassembly done already, so this thread will start at the beginning of the build stage. If I can get someone to do it I may even get a video that I could put on youtube but I will for sure have high res pictures here.

What parts sources are you using? This is almost identical to the C6 I will be building in a few months with the exception that I will be adding a gear vendor behind mine as well. Just curious on where you sourced the bits at. I haven't even gotten to the ordering stage yet.

I'm interested and I think many in the future will pick this build thread up off Google. Great Idea!

I got my parts from PATC...... C4 C6 Performance Transmission from PATC, C6 Transmission however I believe that some of the hard parts could be picked up from salvage yards if you didnt want to pay full price for new ones. I will get into the finer details later during the build. I got the K9, 9XX, 21LR, F7 and the 25TW kits from them to start. I still want to get a new dipstick and torque converter along with a few other odds and ends, but that got me started..

Ok guys here we go. I have all my parts in now and I am soaking my Friction plates and will start assembly tomorrow. Tonight I am going to show the new parts and the original parts that will be replaced if applicable. Because there are a lot of pictures I will be making several posts to preserve the integraty of the thread. All my pictures are hosted on Photobucket and I imbed a direct ling to them here. clicking on the pictures will open a high res version of the picture for the people that have high def monitors, or anyone that wants a closer look at any of the pictures. I am sorry that they are not super shots as I took the pictures on my HTC 8X Windows phone.

So lets get to some pictures!!

Here is the front planetary gear set, ring gear, sun gear and shell. The left is original and the right is the new parts. You may notice that the original carrier of the planetary was aluminum while the new set is all steel. The new Sun gear is much larger as well.

Next are the rear planets and ring gears. Again the left is original and right is replacement..... For those that don't know, the splines on the right ring gear hub are sticking up above the hub quite a bit. This adds strength and is very desirable.

As was mentioned before this is an E4OD gear set. Now I have not had that transmission apart before (My experience with Transmissions is limited to the C6 Only. I am an engine builder and the purpose of this thread is to show what can be done with the C6. I can not in any way say that you will get the same results as me if you follow what I have laid forth in this thread.) but I think if someone wanted to risk it and pick up a 1997 year E4OD from a salvage yard, you could get all the hard parts for this build out of it...........

Here is the reverse/low Race and one way bearing set

The original one way bearing set is in a million pieces. This is typical of the older C6s.

Here are the new clutches and steels, and the new band is pictured with the original below. Notice the new band is wider then the original one. Also you will notice that the inside of the friction plates have different shaped "teeth" that corresponds to the proper location inside the transmission, so you don't have to worry about getting them mixed up and in the wrong spot during building.
