I think every manufacture had problems with their CVT transmissions, Chrysler, Nissan, Saturn and Ford. They are non-rebuildable, that's one reason the trans shops don't touch them. I don't even think you can get rebuild parts for them. I know two guys that own trans shops and they both tried to "fix" one and they lost, they ended up buying a trans from the dealer.
I know at one time if you went to buy parts from the Chrysler or Nissan dealer for a CVT trans there is only one part number and that was for the whole trans.
Probably the cheapest way to replace a bad CVT is with a used one from a wreck. When somebody asks me what is a good used car to buy, First thing I tell them is not to buy anything with a CVT.
Good Luck, I know it sucks

I worked for a tire company at that time . I see it more as an under inflation issue by Ford . Not a Tire quality issue . I ran Firestone tires on a few vehicles , they were great tires . I have used many makes over the years . Most major brands , today , are on par with each other .

As part of their investigation inre to Explorer roll overs, the Firestone "C rated tires" were found to be defective by the NHTSA.

I seem to recall something inre to the rubber being stored outside, causing it to deteriorate before being processed.

Memory does not serve me well as to the facts of the case . I do , however , remember tires being supplied for a stated application . I also remember them not being used properly in the intended application . That said , time does not serve me well on the facts . I can only state the impression I got at the time . Money Talks ... Shame is , Ford and Firestone had Generations of relationships that were ruined by the fiasco .I also remember a head rolling at Ford .... A Frenchman I think.
