Cam chain rattle on start up
Hey guys I am back for more of your great help. I had a 4.6 2005 ticking time bomb motor which now has a new Ford rebuilt engine. After six thousand miles of exceptional running I parked it for four days and upon start up I heard a metallic rattle for a second from the engine. The tension seems to bleed down after a time. I hope there are Ford mechanics listening. Is their anything I can add to the oil to fix the seal? I am running synthetic oil in the truck and motor craft filters. It only does it after a 4 day sit. Everyday use, no problem. Thanks for your previous help during the original problem with the motor. Is there a class action starting to make ford pay for the cam journal destruction of these motors?

I don't know about additives, but I do know how you can avoid that rattle. Hold the accelerator to the floor and crank the engine for a few seconds. At WOT while cranking, the computer in a Ford shuts the fuel off. It's a strategy to help clear a flooded engine. Cranking for a few seconds turns the engine over slowly but will also pressurize the oiling system. That will keep your chains from rattling when you let the accelerator go and start it. You should also do this when you change the oil to get oil through the filter and pressurize the system.

hold down gas!!
Hey thanks for the tip. I always cringe when I start after oil change. I do not think I should have to do this on a new motor ( the old engine did not do this ) I wish some lawyer could get together with the hundreds of us who had the motor crash and burn through no fault of our own. I still see ticking motor threads to this day on 04-07 4.6 and 5.4 motors. I am not talking about the cam adjusters on the 5.4 engine. I am having problems trading in the truck as the dealers keep bending down near the right wheel well to listen for the knock. In my case the metal went down to the bottom end and ate the thrust bearing up. Ford is doing a good job covering it up till time runs out. Thanks again. Bob
