Just about finished with my 390 build. Now I need to decide on a distributor.
This is what my build is 390, 40 over, comp 268h cam, edelbrock performer and holley truck avenger 670 carb. So I thinking msd 8595 ready-to-run and a 6a or a D.U.I advantage? Do I need to spend the money on these higher end distributors? Or go with some thing else?
You can get a late model FE distributor and do either duraspark or gm module as well. I am still running stock coil and points with my setup......haven't decided which way to go....
Thanks all the information. This motor is going in a 76 highboy and is going to pull a 21' Willie jet boat. So is there a benefit with the msd or a better distributor then a stock one. This is my first build and the truck is not my primary tow rig. But I want a classic Ford that can pull the hills in the great n.w. Thanks for the replys

No, The 76 should have duraspark. You don't need hi performance parts for pulling. Headers for better ail flow would be good.
The HEI swap is super easy but it is bigger, the petronix is a great easy kit also. The HEI kits on eBay come with a new coil, cap, and wires for 100$, it was to hard to beat for me.
