Rebuilt 272/292 Y block?

Guys,

It looks like my old Y-block is tired. It runs just fine but drips a ton of oil out of the road draft tube every time it runs. Does anyone know if there any reputable shops around that carry these engines rebuilt?

It seems like I search forever and come up with nothing. I know that a good source for parts is John Mummert's site but does anyone know of any places that carry complete long blocks? I would have my old core to return and my local garage would do the swap as he is a jasper dealer.

I don't want to spend a ton of $$$$$ but would like a decent running engine that does not mark it's territory with 10w30 as my truck will not be a daily driver (only a weekend/pleasure driver). I was quoted about 6500.00 from start to finish including removal, complete tear down, rebuild and re-install by a local shop who does excellent work but my truck is not the kind where you would spend that kind of money on. I am looking to get away with about half that or so.

Thanks in advance!

Ouch. If the old beast is still running OK practicing patience is your best bet. Ask around, keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist or local papers for another motor, you can pick up pretty cheaply. Since you mentioned a long block it doesn't sound like matching numbers is important anyway. Pick up an old motor, take it apart yourself and send the parts out for rework. You could even pay someone to put it all together if you're a little hesitant. If you're mechanically inclined, you can do it for half of that $6,500, plus it's really satisfying to do it yourself.

I saw a 292? sitting in a 60 yesterday. I could check into it further if you like. It's located about 20 miles N of Ithaca, NY.
You never know what you might find on craigslist...picked up a running 292 out of a 64 last year.

I'm not really equipped to do much work here at home on the truck. Ideally I'd like to find a ready to drop in motor from a reputable shop or find someone who could take care of this one without breaking the bank. I have an excellent local shop who can do the swap for me.

I made the stupid mistake of believing the seller that the motor was rebuilt but did not push for receipts as I should have. Overall the truck was pretty much as described other than that "minor" detail. Oh well first and last out of state internet purchase of a vehicle. That's where my hesitation comes from with buying a motor on craigslist.

Vehicle Detail

292 V8, 212hp, 3 speed manual transmission on column, engine and transmission have been rebuilt (My A** ), radio delete, heater, wood bed, chrome wheels, original owners manual. Seller has original wheels and tires.

Trying to remember the road draft . There is a screen filter in the canister have you checked that? If I recall correctly I think there is also a drain-back hole that returns oil to the engine. Might that be plugged?

S&J engine in Spokane, Wa sells 'em. I just got one for $1950 after core. That included a cam upgrade for 75 bucks. Shipping for me was zero as I live about 20 miles from their shop. 7 year, 100K warranty is hard to beat. And these guys have a rep among the local auto repair shops that is stellar.

I changed the filter in the canister with a new one I got from somewhere online and I believe (but am not 100% sure) that the drain back hole is open. My guess is that this beast is just in need of some love (rebuild)

I was hoping I could find someone that had experience with these guys. I had emailed them and they gave me a quote so they are surely a front runner if I go with a new engine. Please keep us posted on how yours does.

How are those guys to deal with?

I am having a bear of a time with John's F-fun hundreds over some springs that I ordered over a month ago. Luckily they were fairly cheap (under 25.00) so If I get hosed it won't be too painful

Being a semi retired auto mech in this area, I have dealt with them more than once. They stand behind their work. And the guarantee isn't any of this pro rata garbage. If it coughs at 6 years, 364 days and 23 hours, it's a full boat guarantee

I've dealt with Rockauto a lot no problems at all. Basically they are a lot like Amazon. Items are shipped from all over the country. Nice thing is you can find out shipping charges up front before ordering.
Another thought: Have you checked with local NAPA store? I've bought engines through them before and not have to pay shipping.

You could probably pick one up for a couple of hundred bucks on Craigslist or an online classified for Yblocks or Hot Rods or even here.
I would take a closer look at the road draft tube system. How much is actually leaking? Both of the Yblocks I've had leaked constantly. You could also try a heavier oil. Rotella T is 15w40 and is supposedly formulated with detergents for older engines.

Update

Well guys it has been a while but I have an update about my search for another motor for my tired 272 in my 1957. I called out to John Mummert's shop and asked them if they rebuilt engines or sold "crate" Y-blocks. He asked where I lived and I told him Pa so he gave me Harry Hutten's contact info.

<a href="http://s141.photobucket.com/user/btw77/media/57%20Ford/5e77f921-8a04-40dc-a647-a033_zps428b18c1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r69/btw77/57%20Ford/5e77f921-8a04-40dc-a647-a033_zps428b18c1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 5e77f921-8a04-40dc-a647-a033_zps428b18c1.jpg"/></a> .......

yep that Harry!

Here are some pics from his garage:

He had a nice 312 Y-block that he installed in place of the 272 and did several other things to make the truck more of a driver (clutch, MSD ignition etc) I can't wait to get it back and will try and post pics as soon as I can....It may be a while though cause I will be driving it

I like the, "it may be awhile because I will be driving it." part. That's what they're meant for. I like the shade of blue, both on the engine and the truck
