ya, I have heard the Phoenix wrecking yards are pretty picked over when it comes to old Ford trucks.
I came across a guy that deals in used and new parts for FE trucks up here. Apparently he has quite a bit of stuff in stock... works out of his house.

We have opposite dilema's, I over heat in town, not on the freeway... I have a 160 thermo, you have a 192... I wonder if a 180 is the way to go?

Once you're over 30MPH or so the whole fan/fan shroud thing is a moot point, by that speed cooling is almost entirely from ram air. The fan serves to draw air while sitting still or at low speeds. If it's overheating on the highway I doubt a fan shroud will make any gain.

I had a similar problem after rebuilding my motor and I had installed a new sending unit. I thought it was running hot because of what the stock gauge was telling me, and replaced the water pump with a new edelbrock HV unit, replaced the thermostat even though it was new, went to a flex fan - then back to the stock setup with a new clutch, added Redline water wetter, and even added two electric pussher fans in front ot the grill. The radiator was replaced when I rebuilt the motor.

I finally hooked up a good after market water temp gauge and it showed that I was getting up to 185 MAX even though the stock gauge was reading HIGH.

Try checking it with a real gauge. Its cheap and easy.

well, it'll boil over just sitting ideling, so, I don't think there is any question...
I realize stock guages are not accurate, but when it spews as the stock guage hits "H"...
unless I'm missing something.

When the stock guage gets to H, it is hot. There is little needle movement compared to temp rise at the upper end of the guage.

'Everything mentioned in the above posts are important to check, I can add 1 more thing to look at. If you havent changed both upper and lower hoses do that. I have see the springs in them rotted away, and the hose will collapse on the inside and choke off coolant flow. I would say your lack of shroud is #1 prob.

new hoses.
thatnks, the shroud will be picked up Sat., and thrown on Sun am.
I hope between it and the cap things are taken care of.
The rebuild price suprised me, so, funds are gone, hopeing for a cheap fix.

When you mount a fan clutch you don't use a spacer.
The flange of the fan clutch goes on right after the water pump pulley.
Let's hope you have the (4) 1 1/2" FT bolts that it takes.

I haven't had much luck finding fan shrouds for trucks of this vintage. The yards in my area are pretty well gone-over as well. Where did you find the ones you were talking about?

I was going through a catalog for 67-72 trucks and they had shrouds brand new for about $100. Forget the catalog ... You can buy kits from most racing stores like Summit Racing and JEGS too.

Also, picked up my new, in the box, Ford 7 blade fan.
I'll bolt it up tomorrow am when it's cool.

There is a couple of guys here in Phoenix that deal in FE truck parts. Not sure I'm allowed to mention who - phone numbers etc. by board rules. PM me if you want the contact info. ... Nice guys.

Thanks Mike. PM was actually disabled on the last board upgrade, and your profile doesn't allow emails. But if you could email it to me through my profile, that would be great. Are these the guys that you got your shroud from?

Don't know if this helps any, but I called my local Ford House for a fan shroud for my '71 about a year ago and they can still lay hands on them. Seems to me the price was around $80-$90. I know it was under $100.

i got this 'refurbished' one for $40.
Only thing that is wrong with it, is the "caution fan" sticker looks 34 years old.

The refurbished shroud, new Ford 7 blade fan, new rad cap and adjusting the timing to 7* (was 10*) has worked out great. I'm not totally out of the woods yet, but at least it does not boil over now. Also, once I do get moving, it recovers much quicker than berfore. It still gets up warmer than I'd like, but, no more fear of being stranded on the side of the road.
Those guys confirmed that my rad is the severe duty (not the words they used) one from autozone, and the inside looked fine.

They told me my water pump pully is huge (it's actually larger than the crank pully), and they have smaller ones that will speed up the pump, so, next w/e, I think I'll tackle that.

Thanks for all your help so far.
