ICP questions

Quick story about my 2000 F250. 6,000 miles on resealing top end including hpop. I found slight oil residue in the ICP so I replaced it. I did not use a Ford ICP. Truck has run great. Recenty have a no start issue when warm. Wait 10 minutes, it fires right up and runs great idle to WOT. After a 30 minute run this morning it would not restart. Pulled the connection to the ICP and it started easy. Plugged sensor back in, no start. Checked the IPR tin nut. It's fine, solid. Pulled codes P1280, P1211, P1212. I've got to believe it's the crappy ICP sensor from carquest, but I just want to check with the pros here before I order a new one from Ford.

Hi,
Sounds like you have got it.
That is a typicol problem with aftermarket parts.
Your approach to solving the problem was right on.
Good luck
Tony

UPDATE!!!!!!

New Ford ICP did not solve the problem. Still won't restart for about 10 minutes when warm. When it fires, it runs great. My next step will be to put new Orings in the IPR.

Anyone with any ideas? Save me from myself, please.

Hard start when warm is a symptom of bad IPR o-rings...it's a cheap try at a fix.

Interesting that the truck fires right up with the Chinese ICP sensor unplugged. I just mention that to remember where you started.

Well Tugly, not sure if you're helping or just demonstrating your avatar. But yes, I realize where I started and how you helped in the second post, thanks. At least the IPR kit isn't expensive.

While I have your attention Tugly, tell me about the AutoEnginuity programming. Good stuff? We've got plenty of vehicles it could help us with on the ranch.

Not trying to waste your time... I was just making note that it's very odd that you started with something that looked like an obvious ICP issue, and we may not want to divert down the "won't warm-start" solution just yet. In case you're wondering, the normal no-warm-start solution is new injector O-rings or injectors.

If you are serious about looking into AE, it paid for itself many times over. I've used it on my truck, I've used it on other trucks, I've learned the nuances of the 7.3L, I've graphed data and analyzed data from dozens of other trucks, and it has pulled me out of the fire on Stinky and Stingy (Stingy is the P'us). AE does basic stuff on all vehicles, but it does very advanced stuff when you buy enhanced packages. I have the Ford enhanced, as do many others here - it's good for all Fords from 1996 to present vehicles. Some users here have the Domestic bundle, and there are a gajillion import bundles. It's about the least expensive PC-based software I've found to-date, that is both powerful and reliable.

"Reliable" - that's a loaded one. I've experimented with other scan tools, but this AE is akin to the Toyota Corolla in the driveway. Fire it up and the sucker always gets you there.

The ultimate specifically for our Superduties is the NGS from that era, but that's a tricky one to get.

Now... if you have AE, you could log a run and share the data. Then we could get a better idea if you have mechanical issue or an electronic issue. If you have a scan tool that doesn't log... well... how fast can you read and how good is your memory?

You're not wasting my time, no way.

I'm very serious about AE. I may order it today. Paying $140 or $30 for an ICP sensor or an IPR kit is one thing, pulling injectors is another. I need to diagnose not guess. We are Ford heavy on the ranch so we have plenty of need here. Be it diesel or gas, we are always working on one or another. I'm interested if an AE with proper bundles will help with issues like air conditioner diagnosis. We have a 2011 F150 with a computer controlled A/C.

Back to this 7.3. This thing has about 260K miles on it so I wouldn't be surprised about injector issues. I wouldn't be surprised by anything now.
