Brake dust on right front wheel

We were about half way through a 2000 mile trip and I started to notice a build up of brake dust only on the right front wheel. The left front has very little build up and I haven't noticed the truck pulling to the right during normal driving or braking but we were towing a 12k 5th wheel RV and had to make some rather strenuous stops when little car drivers decided to dart in front of us on I-40. I'm going to call my service tech on Monday but I thought I would ask for input from the forum first.

The truck has around 31k miles now and the rotors and pads are original equipment.

Thanks,
Ed

Next time you stop, be careful but compare temps between the two front tires. If the left is a lot hotter then you may have a sticking pad.

Otherwise if cold I wash them down and monitor from there. Wash them done first thing in the am when cold.

Senix,

I'm going to try to take the rig out for a test run some time this weekend, if the rain ever stops. Since we came home it seems like the weather is in one of it's "patterns" where it rains every day. I'll wash down the wheels like you said and I have one of those point-and-shoot digital IR thermometers to check the temperatures with. It may not be the most accurate thing but I'm only comparing temperatures and not trying to see if anything is out of spec.

Thanks for the help and I hope you're enjoying the new truck. Some day I'll aspire to such greatness

Took the truck and 5th wheel for a 20 mile loop. When I got home the right front wheel was too hot to touch and the left front wheel was very warm but "touchable". I used the digital IR gauge and measured +500 degree. F on the right and around 130 degree. F on the left. Time for a call to the Ford dealer and maybe the extended warranty can help...then again.

Thanks Senix.

could be brakes or the hub itself.

At least you know where the problem is. Not just imagination.

Have you headed in to your dealership yet, KC8RXQ? Let me know when you get a diagnosis and I'll see what I can do to help.

Crystal,

Thank you for the reply. The truck is in the shop and according to the Service Advisor, the technician indicated that the retaining springs on the front right calipers were rusted and wouldn't release the pads. They recommended replacing both left and right sets and I gave my approval. The Premium Care warranty won't apply according to the Advisor and I'm OK with that. Brake pads are a maintenance item. I did tell the Advisor that I wanted the tech to double check the brakes and make sure there were no other issues lurking in the background. (In other words drive it after the repairs and check for excessive heat on the wheels.) I've read too many posts, and talked to a few owners of Ford vehicles, about brakes sticking/seizing and I really don't want to have this problem cause a failure when I'm towing my RV.

I hope to get the truck back this afternoon and I'll try to follow up with a report soon.

Again, thank you for the interest.

Regards,

The latest, and hopefully the last, update on the brake problem.

The dealership found a bad caliper (probable leak) on the right front brake. They replaced the unit under the extended warranty but I still got charged for the pads. Since I'm trying to re-develop a relationship with these folks I won't challenge the replacement pads and am thankful for the forum support and watch care. I rechecked the wheel temperatures and this is what I have observed so far.

LF at 95 deg. F
RF at 83 deg. F
LR at 81 deg. F
RR at 83 deg. F

I'll keep monitoring the left front (LF) temperature and see what develops.

Thanks again folks.

Temps are good. Always a good idea to replace the pads, especially since it was getting hot.

Pads might glaze over.

Yearly greasing of the slide pins and generally cleaning them off is recommended.
