Hi,
I have a 2006 F-150 Supercab King Ranch 4wd. The 4wd is not working. Took it to the dealer and they tell me the 4wd module is not communicating with the PCM. It is my understanding that this problem is rare...like 1 in a million. Ford wants to replace the entire PCM.
In the past, I have had electrical problems with this vehicle due to corroded wires. Any advice would be much appreciated before I go and spend 1500.00.

Check the iwe solenoid first. About 15 bucks and you can always take it back

The only other thing would be the hubs... id take it to a second ford dealership and get another opinion

 

Just hubs and iwe? There is much more to that system than just those 2 pieces.


I also recommend a second opinion. I would go to an automotive electrical specialist ( if your near Manchester,ct I can recommend a great one) I would suspect a bad wire or wires abd some in-depth testing is needed to diagnose. Could be the switch,motor,trans case and any wires in between. Sorry I don't have the answer, but it may be easier abd cheaper than a pcm

 

I would get a second opinion. Ford generally doesn't have problems with modules or PCM's. Connections and wires are a different story. The F150's have been known to have transfer case shift motor problems. I owned an 06 that had that problem when it was 2 years old.

 

I quite understand thats not the only things. I listed things that I knew and that ive had problems with and those are the majority problems. I dont want to list things ive never had an experience with

 

Thank you for your help. I live in Illinois. Lots of rust due to salt. I tend to agree with you that it is not the pcm, but very well could be bad wiring or a hub. I did inform them that I have had wiring issues. The problem with most dealers is that they prefer to change parts until they find the bad one.
One more question: do you know if it's possible to reprogram the pcm? Could be a dumb question.

You can reflash it but a dealer has too

 

One way to tell if the shift motor is bad is to switch it to 4wd. Then get under the truck and smack the shift motor with a hammer. If it engages 4wd, you likely have to replace the shift motor. That's how the tech checked mine. After the shift motor was replaced everything worked fine.
