Ford's new diesel verses Duramax

I have had no experience with either of these, and not much owner feedback either. I am just wondering how they compare for towing fuel economy ect. on an even playing field.
About a month ago I was driving up the Cassiear in Canada and came up on the back of a travel trailer in some rough going. I was in my 97 Powerstroke carrying maybe 1200 pounds-no trailer. Well whenever we would hit smooth pavement it was all I could do to keep up with this guy but he would slow down in the rough gravel. After about a half an hour of this I finally got past him. He was running a Duramax 1 ton 4x4 4 door pulling a 27 foot travel trailer. I was impressed (well as much as a Ford guy can be impressed by a chevy)

I believe it was fourwheeler magazine...but it doesn't matter. They compared the cummins, duramax and new 6.0 powerstroke and the powerstroke pulled the best of the three. As far as fuel economy, I have no clue.

I was reading that artical also and happend to notice that it was done in Cali. so did they bring in a 305hp cummins which I thought was a no no. Because they can only get the 250hp trucks there

Check pickuptruck.com for the best test I have ever seen.

Honestly, you will not be disappointed with any of the diesels you buy, all 3 will uproot a tree, accelerate like a big v8 and get decent fuel economy considering.

Thats true. I just got back from the mountains and we pulled my jeep on a 18' trailer behind my friends duramax. That thing would still accelerate enough to knock you back in your seat...going uphill! They really are all good trucks. I just prefer Ford.

I think You hit it on the head... I Wish more people would respond as you did, you PREFER FORD, its not that Chevy and Dodge are junk or underpowered its just that different people have different preferences.

I'd still like for someone to show me a D-max with 200,000 miles on it that still has all original parts. I don't think aluminum and heat are a good combination.

I think if you stepped down to the Ford 6.0 diesel forum, it might just turn you against owning one. I had no idea so many people were having quality/reliability issues with them. And it sounds like Ford, Being ford, puts their nose up under warranty (not limited to ford by the way).
But only time will tell what 200,000 miles will do to either engine, very true. Both engines are exceptional, and if I had the money ( I test drove, and was offered a deal on a 4 door leather loaded duramax for 39,000) It would be a hard choice for me.

You are right about the aluminum heads. They will work fine unless you over heat and then they are a lot less forgiving.
Many aluminum headed engines reach well over 200,000 like the 22R, so before long we will hear of people getting that kind of miles on them. I am sure you will also hear the head/ head gasket failure stories too. The very first story I heard on the new Ford was from a dealership employee. One of the first ones that they sold was back within a week with head problems

I just came back from a road trip and I was at a truck stop in Georgia and saw several 6.0 owners and I stopped and asked them how they liked their trucks and if they had the symptoms some of these people are having on here. Not a single solitary one of them had any problems with theirs, and they had had them since March and April.

Remember the majority of people who talk here are the ones who actually have problems with theirs. Look at it this way, would you stop a cop and tell him what a good job he's doing?? Probably not. Now what if he stops you what are you gonna tell him?? Probably to go chase the one that passed you. See, just because you never hear of a success story, doesn't mean they're not out there. In fact, I am willing to bet that there are more satisfied 6.0 owners than not.

If I had just paid 40K for a truck, and someone stopped randomly and asked me if I had any trouble with it....what do you think I'm going to say? Of course not...this is a sweet truck! I don't think anyone would dog their own truck to a stranger whether they had problems or not.

I would, but then I would rather have 10 $4000 trucks than one $40,000 truck. How do you people afford those things anyway?
Lets see, I win a sweepstakes and after taxes have $40,000. I think I'll run right down and spend it on a truck that is worth only about 32,000 before the ink is dry on the paper. Yep that's what I'd do. Right
