I wonder if the F250 could have held the speed (60) if he had manually shifted to third. The Raptor seemed to struggle at times in 3rd gear. And what if the F250 had 4.30 gears.

I pull 2x that weight and I can pull 60 mph in third with no problem on that kind of grade with 4.30 gears but because it's my truck I would hold it at 50 in third.

My experience is that with 4.30 gears the gas mileage would have been far better. They mentioned in that video that the F-250 only hit 3rd gear *once* on that pull, the rest of the time they wound it out in 2nd. I only pull a Jeep with my truck and camper so it's not a fair comparison, but on steep grades I'm usually in 3rd or 4th most of the way, and I've never seen anything as low as 2.8 MPG.

These guys tested a 6.2 Silverado 1500 towing 10000 lbs and did about the same time of 8:4 minutes and 3.4 mpg. Also tested was a F150 Ecoboost which got 2.9 mpg and took 7:36 minutes.

And don't forget the altitude at which they were driving at, an elevation of 11,158 ft (3,401 m). They were down by at least 30% in power.

After Jeep Safari week in Moab next week I'll be heading to Denver, so I'll be able to travel the same exact route they took in that video. I'll report my findings.

Sorry to dig this thread up from the shallow grave. So how did your truck perform from Moab to Denver on that long stretch of hwy following the Colorado river? Were you able to pull the hill in 4th gear?

Ah right! Unfortunately my plans to test my truck over the Eisenhower Grade fizzled when my Son announced he was flying into Las Vegas for business and I re-routed my Vacation to the south after EJS to go have dinner with him one night. I hadn't seen him for a while and it was great to catch up in person.

Wonder how an F150 FX4 or Lariat with the 6.2L would have done on that test compared to the Raptor especially.
