2011 F250 Blown Turbo

at 100,432 miles my turbo blew. no warranty as it was outside the 100K limit! I questioned the tech at Ford what would be the causes. I am running an AFE performance air filter and intake tube (not just a filter in stock box).
I was told that the aftermarket performance filter was most likely the cause as it allows for too much boost.

Any thoughts on this claim? I would up buying a 2014 Platinum and would like to know for future If there is any validity to this statement or what I could do to prevent this from happening again.

Many Thanks !!

I'm not sure about more boost but if the filter is higher flow I suppose it could let more junk in that could eventually damage the turbo.

^^^ this.

It's not going to affect boost, but it's not uncommon for aftermarket filters to let larger particulates by that can cause damage. It can be risky to run aftermarket air filters on a turbocharged engine.

I have an aFe CAI so I'll be dismissed as biased, but I think you were given a lot of BS. I didn't notice any changes in boost when I installed mine. I've had heard the claims that they don't clean as well as stock, but if you clean them properly, I think they do. I've read the claims on both sides and think they do just fine.

They are saying no warrenty for 432 miles???? Or is it because of the non-OEM filter? I know I would be contacting Crystal!

That service tech is an idiot, and worse than that, being dishonest with you.

Boost pressure is controlled and limited by the ECM/program and wastegate, no filtration system is going to magically up your boost to some pressure that causes turbo failure.

Take your business elsewhere, there's no reason Ford ought to be dismissing you and your $50k+ purchase over 400 something miles.

Matter of fact, find out the exact mileage your warranty started. I know mine expires well over the "100,000" number, as it wasn't purchased at exactly 0.0 miles on the odometer.

And nojoke and Tom, guys, the OP would have to be sucking desert sand/peat gravel/small birds into his turbo to blow it. Panty hose stretched over the intake tube would do enough to prevent that....

Potentially you could have dusted the turbo.

When my high pressure turbo was out of spec in my 6.4 I had a banks ram air on it. Tech looked carefully at the turbo for signs of dusting. Did not find any and so it was warranteed.

This is completely incorrect.

Unless there was some probelm with the aFe or it was installed wrong or something ..... It's B.S.

You guys are thinking of the old K&N 1 ply filters you can see thru......
Yep they dusted turbos

The aFe ProGuard5 (5 ply) and ProGuard7 (7 ply) filter fine, supposidly better than stock (yes that came from aFe with no backup)

I had aFe on mine for 80,000 miles and my turbo is not dusted. It was just fine until it blew up. (my truck is tuned since new so the turbo going was not a big shocker...)

These turbos work good but they are not all that strong.
Only way to prevent is to get a 2015 which is supposed to have a stranger turbo

He wrote 100,432 miles. I believe there are a few zeros between the two....

Turbo is warranted for 100,000 miles... So the bickering is over exactly 432 miles. Really, less, because it is impossible to get a truck with 0.0 miles on the odometer. (as stated)

If the Tech says teh AFE did it, then I would be contacting AFE. They say there filters are better than stock for filtration, I am sure they would want to know that some tech is slandering them. Or if it is true, then they could be sued for false advertising. (Two paths for this to happen).

If this was a "cheap" repair it probably isn't worth the hassle, BUT I doubt a turbo replacement is "cheap".

^^^^ Yeah! What Dakster said. I'm not a "something for nothing" guy but that sounds like bull. The AFE's protect the turbos better if installed correctly. I have a stocker with stock programming but have dusted a turbo back in the day with a K&N drop in without a tune. Guy showed it to me...no doubt. Ask to see it or pictures. Take your own of Turbo.Take pics of install. Call AFE. Contact Crystal. Call Obama!! OK sorry I'm back...good luck!

You have a good point.
The paperwork we all signed during the purchase shows the mileage on it.
I picked mine up at 4 miles but didn't sign the paperwork until 89 miles the next day.

Sucks to hear, but I'm a little shocked it took 100K to blow, you must have had one that was actually fairly balanced. I have heard of manufacturers fixing vehicles just out of warranty before. It's a tough situation and sorry you are going through it.

I just went through this same process with Toyota when my wife's rear differential failed 12,000 miles out of warranty. The dealer couldn't do anything but told me to call the manufacturer, and they ended up covering half the repair. I've heard numerous people do the same with Ford.

Give Ford customer service a call and politely ask if they will cover the repair.
