I have a 01 F350 DRW V10 manual 5-speed that I bought new. It has about 70K on it, just used for RVing and occasional construction material hauling. It has been dealer maintained at the dealership where I bought it and never had any serious issues.

It is now doing this really odd behavior, I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas about what could be going on. I have had two episodes of this problem, one about three weeks ago, and one today. So here is how it goes, the details are exactly alike both times:

1. The truck has not been started in days. I start it up at my house and drive about 30 minutes to a construction supply yard. It starts and drives perfectly.

2. I park at the business and cut off the engine. I take about 10-15 minutes dealing with the business.

3. I have to drive to another part of the yard to complete my business. It starts and runs fine as I move the truck and then cut it off again. This stop is shorter, maybe 2-4 min.

4. When I try to start the truck to leave and go home, it fires up very briefly when the key is first turned, but then it doesn't go into that usually V10 high rev start sequence, it just spins without starting. Successive attempt to start do the same thing: firing at first, then just spinning. Giving no gas, pumping or holding the pedal down to not change anything. Waiting 15 min or so does not help.

The first time this happened, I had it towed to the nearest Ford dealership. They could not get to it for a couple of days but when they did, it started fine and showed no error codes. I brought it home. Today when this same thing happened, I just left it locked in the supply yard and it will probably start tomorrow. I plan to take it to my regular dealer soon. This is the kind of intermittent problem that is difficult to crack, I don't know if I can make it happen at the dealer. I only put 89 octane Shell or BP in it. The fuel filter was replaced last fall. There was very little use over the winter months. It had about a half tank of 10% ethanol gas during that period. I do not use gas additives.

Does any of this sound familiar? It almost seems like the electronics controlling the fuel is confused or something.

My first though would be fuel pump. I have seen them fail intermittently. The fact that it starts for a second and then dies and fails to restart...sounds like it is running out of gas. With the key on try banging on the fuel tank ( when it is in the no start situation) and listen to see if the fuel pump fires up, if it has a bad spot in the armature and you jostle it enough it may start spinning again. That is my guess as to why it restarted after the tow.

Fuel delivery issue would be my first guess also. Secondary, perhaps a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor

After reading your assessments, I felt better about OKing the fuel pump replacement that my Ford dealer said was needed. As you know, it is in the fuel tank and the tank must be drained and removed. Complete cost was around $1100, runs great now.
