Massive Coolant Leak out of nowhere

Hey guys

I'm new to the forum. My truck is a 2007 F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4 3v FFV. I bought the truck a while back with roughly 60,000 miles and has 97,000 miles now. I am the second owner and the previous owner was meticulous with maintenance. All work was documented and was performed by the Ford dealer. I am decent at mechanic and do most work myself and have friends help me when I need it. Today I drove the truck to my tax guy and after walking out there was coolant pouring from the front of the truck. It wasn't running hot and was not leaking when I parked it. I checked the upper and lower radiator hoses ans they were dry. It also seemed that the leak was behind the radiator. So, obviously, I am assuming that its a water pump failure. I am currently recovering from a broken femur and fractured knee cap.. so I am unsure of how much I can do. How labor intensive is the water pump on these engines? Also can anyone advise as to a hose or possible culprit I may have missed? Thanks in advance..

Massive coolant leak

I can't really help yet since I have exactly the same problem on my 2007 F150 Lariat 2wd and have not yet torn into the problem. It's weird too because mine leaked real bad about 6 months ago one afternoon - then quit leaking completely until yesterday!

This time the leak isn't quitting. I can't see where the leak is coming from since the radiator is so shrouded but the hoses look good and I can't see any water coming from the fan area. It's looks almost like the radiator split right across the bottom by the way the water is pouring out.

If anyone can add advice or warn about the "gotchas" before I delve into the unknown I would appreciate it too.

I'm planning to order a new radiator tomorrow and replace it this weekend. I'll post again if you don't already have an answer before I finish the job.

btw - No experience with them yet but I'm planning to buy from radiators.com. They have a new after market radiator for the truck for $159 with free shipping.

I had the O-ring for the thermostat fail on my 2000 F-150 5.4 - that spewed a lot of coolant. The part was about a buck thirty five.

Locate the problem before purchasing a new radiator or water pump.

Water pump replacement is not too bad but it may be the intake manifold.

First of all, I am a COMPLETE rookie when it comes to these trucks. My truck had the factory radiator, which apparently has plastic components, and the plastic components failed... thus letting the coolant pour out. A couple hundred miles ago I changed the oil and while checking the other fluids I noticed the coolant had started getting dirty, which worried me. Then I was in a car accident at work and broke my femur and patella, so I didn't worry about the coolant for a while. After replacing the radiator I let the truck idle and watched for any coolant leaks and have been checking the coolant religiously and it has stayed clean so far. Hopefully the dirty coolant was a result of the disintegrating radiator..

The coolant could have gotten discolored because it was exposed to air. It is usually in a sealed system.
