Im curious how much I can safely tow with my f100. It has a 360 but want to know how much my suspension can take. I am hoping to be getting a bigger boat and it weighs around 3900 pounds. I have been looking for a trailer hitch cause I really dont want to bend up my bumper. Any suggestions and info will be appreciated.
Easy answer. Since Ford widened the frame in the rear for 73-79 F-100/150's 2wd and 4wd, 73-79 F-250/350's 2wd, 77.5-79 F-250 4wd and 79 F-350 4wd, just ask for a receiver hitch for a 73-77 F-250 4wd (Highboy) as the width of the frame is the same as your F-100.
My dad's '77 highboy had a receiver installed with no problem. The hitch store had it in stock and installed the next morning. This was two years ago. Truck manufacturers didn't really change their frame widths too much over the years. A hitch store will have the size you need.
Install a Class 3 or 4 receiver hitch, and you should be able to handle the boat just fine. This photo is with a 4wd truck on a heavier than boat trailer. I have a good bit of towing experience the F100 handled the job fine.
Definitely a receiver style hitch. Combine weight of trailer and boat when purchasing. I don't know the rated towing capacity of your truck, but if tongue weight is an issue with your springs, load equalizer bars will solve that problem.
I built a receiver for my '70 F100/302 and it drug my 4100# wagon on a #1000 open trailer without too much fuss. I did have W/D bars on it. I did put 4.10 gears in the back, that helped.
A Draw-Tite Max-E-Loader Class III/IV receiver hitch. As I recall, I had to drill 2 1/2 holes in the frame. It was pretty easy to install, and I have been very pleased with it. I would recommend it.
Thanks guys. I am looking at the draw tie hitch right now. Not sure if the local dealer will sell it to me so I can save some money. He quoted me 229 installed. Another place told me the hitch was 208.....I think I will let them drill the holes.
