they'll pull anything it's just a matter of how fast you can go.

Being able to tow it is secondary to being able to stop it! I pulled 9k from Denver to So Cal in my 93. It handled it it well. Some of the passes were slow going and I had to stop and let the trans cool down going up the grade out of Needles in 95 degree temps but she got me there. It was a bumper pull with brand new axles and brakes, a brake controller, and a load distribution hitch. The truck has axle blocks the help with stability also.

If you are well prepared you should be fine.

Good luck,

Mac.

This, also keep in mind those numbers include the trucks weight (and everything in it) in addition to the trailer and since IDIs typically weigh 6-8k lbs that takes a decent chunk of weight out of the equation.

Don't know if its relevant or not but on modern trucks they also subtract total towable weight based on elevation (which IMHO makes sense as anyone that tows up here can relate to) but don't know if they did that back in the IDI era.

I'm going to say right now. Yes you can pull it. And you can pull it safely at that although I highly recommend trailer brakes. I've got a 7.3 NA in front of a ZF5 in my 72. The truck has 4.10 gears and while it's no speed demon I've had some nasty heavy loads on it. I figure my trailer weighs in at around 4000lbs, I've never weighed it before. The dump truck which I've had on it is 8800lbs, the 72 itself is 5500lbs. I've also had the 01 which is about 8000lbs on that trailer behind that truck over some wild hills and that was with a blown headgasket.

People give me a hard time about my IDI because they're not the powerhouses that folks are accustomed to now but with some patience and a lot of shifting gears they'll get you where you want to go.
