1973 F100 4x4 PROJECT
Here is my 1973 Ford (obviously ford) F100 4x4 Project. Now I have had this for almost a year and been working on it slowly, but time and money kinda making it a slow project. Although I have been working on it and taking pictures all the way so here goes. btw I was only 17 when I started not knowing much, so anyone consider ever doing anything like this GO FOR IT! because it is an awesome experience.
MY PLANS:
BIG BLOCK SWAP 460/390/maybe429(eventually want to do a Cummings swap)
NP-435
NP-205
GM 14 Bolt
Dana 60 King Pin
Anyways here is what it started out as...........

INFO
So it defenitly was not perfect, but had potential it had a flatbed sorta it was completely rotted out but i have no pictures of that.
SPECS:
302 motor
NP-435 4-speed
Dana 21 JUNK transfer case
Dana 44 HP With Drum Brakes
Ford 9 Inch
Well first off more info on the truck. It did not run on its own (had to put gas in carb from a cup), but fixed that with a fuel pump, rebuilding the carb, and a 2 gallon gas tank from a go-kart
Now for the rust.....
The cab Mount gone..
Frame..

RUST!!
Now I wish I had more pictures at the beginning of the build because there was a lot of work done including remove all of the shackles for the springs, removing shock mounts cross member there was only one in the rear (the center one) and what remained of the other two cross members and sanded the frame of all rust. Now by looking at the photo of the rusted frame this one:
I had cut a 2 foot section out of each side of the frame on the rear. There was some kinda very bad patch job somebody had attempted to do. Can see that piece in the background of the picture still attached to the rest of the frame with two bolts. So what i did is i got some flat steel and bent it to the shape of the frame cut it all to length blahh.. anyways what I did was v-groove the original frame and the new piece welded it in on both sides then ground down the outside. Then i took some more flat steel cut rectangle pieces welded in on inside and on outside all around.

Holy crap. Kudos to you for taking on the scope of that rust. I would moved on and found a better candidate.
302 on a 4x4...... That's a puny motor for a 4WD rig and lacks the low-end torque to get that weight moving. C'est l'vie.
Btw, in your pic I see hollow concrete blocks being used for support. As positioned, the voids (center hole) are horizontal and don't provide as much compressive strength than if the holes were vertical. I'm not trying to be a nanny but I've heard too many stories of guys being crushed because of using hollow blocks. I recommend completely avoid them regardless if there are automotive jackstands elsewhere on the frame.
So what are the long plans for the ol' girl?? Besides fixing the rot .....

Say, check out the tech thread compilation sticky at the top of the front page of this forum. Lotsa good links in there like PS swaps for 73-75s, rust removal using electrolysis, upgrades, tons of how-tos from the web, FTE, and Fordification, and quick links to various vendors.
390 vs 460... Glad to hear you'e thinking of more cubes for the rig.....a 460 is relatively a low-buck way to go versus the 390. What does your donor 75 have?

Bed Swap
Now I have a parts truck I bought from the same person I got my truck from its a 75 2wd with no motor but it had a 390 wish it did have that still and a 3-speed on tree the picture i have the bed had already been taken off.
And this is where the bed went keep in mind this is not bolted on because its coming back off just wanted an idea what it would look like and I also had changed the wheels from some that my dad on a truck that the junk yard now owns haha...

Now I step away from the 73 for a little bit then completely tear apart the 75 because i was missing so many things on the ol beasttt
Here we go!
3-speed that was sold for 150 almost made my money back on the parts truck more for the BEAST.
All fenders and grill... looks kinda cool like this.
Blah EVERYTHING HA

Cuttin up
Well I decided i might as well make the most out of this truck so i need the cab...
I cut the frame in half to get the cab off because i did not know how else to do it with out a tree a come along which no one had a come along and they aren't cheap but i do have a sawzaw... anyways cut the rear of the frame and set the cab on blocks and chained the front of the front to my other truck and pulled VERY carefully forward using a jack on one side of the cab to keep it from catching anything..
Now as it was near the end i put more blocks under it to catch the cab..

There are a few more things i get from the other truck but the one thing i couldn't get over was the dana 21 transfer case which has no 4 low!! and is married to a 2wd drive NP-435 weird stuff eh? So i been search and i found a NP-205 for 75 so of course I went and got it and when i did i saw he had a lot of old ford so of course i asked if he had a NP-435 and he did left with both for $150!
