penzoil

Well penzoil has come out with there new full synthetic and ultra synthetic that I've been researching. Needless to say I thought that Mobil one was great. This product is blowing them away. Literally. They are making it now from natural gas. Tell me what you guys think.....

Meh... For these rigs with vintage metallurgy Shell Rotella 15w-40 still gets my nod.

I use Mobil1 or Royal Purple in my 01 PT Cruiser and 01 S'crew. No changes planned.

From the research I have done and people I have talked to ALL synthetic oils have the same base stock...it's the additive package that makes them different.
I was once friends with a man that owned/invented HPS oils...remeber the old Mobil 1 commercial were they put the oil in the pan and cooked it? He came up with that at SEMA in the early 80's and a Mobil rep saw it and took it. Look at the side of the Mears team,Penske, the top three of Pikes Peak in the early to mid 80's...see what oils that ran...look at Roland Leongs funny car...all ran HPS....it's all about the ESTERs

For everyday use, I think it's all about maintanence frequency vs oil brand for the most part. But who knows, every company is gonna try to make theirs sound superior to the other. And using good oil filters.

I would not use Pennzoil in my lawn mower .Just my experience as a Mechanic seen too many sludge problems yrs ago Rings frozen sludge up oil pump screens plugged and lots of sludge.Maybe the newer stuff is better but I won't use it. I Use Valvoline oil shell Rotella and Motorcraft oil have been for over 40 yrs and have never had any problems with sludge .I always change my oil at 3000 mile intervals

Synthetic oils are usually made up of Group IV base stocks. Group IV being polyalphaolefins. However, group III base stock oils, which are highly refined mineral oils, can also be labeled "synthetic". Regardless, anything labeled "synthetic" is going to be a high quality base stock oil.

That being said, I run 5W-20 Pennzoil in my Civic and change it every 5k, though I'll probably be doing it every 3k now since I got on with the fire department. I average about 37 on the highway with 122,000 on the odometer.

Oils have changed so much, your past experience is likely irrelevant.

Years ago Pennzoil motor oils had a lot of paraffin wax in them which caused them to sludge up .Pennzoil was bad on overhead camshafts on the 2300 engine changed a lot of camshafts in the late 70's and early 80's wiped out from Pennzoil seen piston rings seized up also.

High levels of paraffins is indicative of group I base stocks which haven't been used for at least a couple decades. Like I said, irrelevant. It's like comparing modern gasoline to the lead-laced crap you were pumping in the 60's.

I guess I'm Old school .I still change my oil at 3000 mile intervals .Like I tell people would you take a bath in dirty water over and over .same with engine oil and grease its cheap compared to the alternative of rebuilding or replacing a engine due to poor or no maintenance .

I change my oil every 3K miles as well. Used to use exclusively Valvoline 10w40, until I heard we could run diesel oil in our trucks. Now I'm running Rotella T Triple Protection 15w30.

As for the Penzoil, my dad is an old mechanic and he loves the stuff...at least for all the newer dodges. Don't know why...never asked. Maybe just because it was the cheapest...

Running heavy weight oil in a gas engine seems like a horrible idea to me. Such a viscous liquid is not going to flow very well when the engine is cold.
