There were no "best years." The bottom end as a whole remained pretty well unchanged throughout the years. I read somewhere that the bottom end can handle 40lb of boost without a problem. Honestly, these engines are well built. Why do you think they kept using them for as long as they did? What was it, 41 years? If you're absolutely serious about going overkill, you can find a bottom end out of a heavy duty vehicle, which would've featured the forged crankshaft. Being Ford, there was no actual rule as to which trucks got it. The bigger trucks like the F550 would've had it, but it's been spotted in the F100 too. Ford quite often had leftover parts that they'd simply throw on random engines, which is yet another reason why it's hard to properly ID anything Ford with a casting number. However, the two confirmed "casting" numbers on the forged crank are C5TE-F and C6TE-G. It is very rare and in my opinion pointless to even look for. Simply go grab whatever 300 you can find and use it.

What are your goals with the engine?

Thanks.

Im from the school of V8, where you just GOTTA look for a Mexican 302 block for the higher nickel content, you just GOTTA look for a 429SCJ block to get the 4 bolt mains, you just GOTTA have a '69 351W because it was the best 351 W ever cast etc etc etc........so I figured some might be better than others and worth searching for.

Im using it in my plow/dump truck which sees severe low end abuse.

Thanks.

For low end, keep it factory. Any mods will bring the powerband up unless you carefully build it.
