New injectors, thermostat stuck, runaway, water in oil.......ugh

93 f350 N/A 248k bone stock air cleaner to exhaust tip.

Well the title says it all. Replaced the injectors and started it up, got some white smoke with unburnt fuel. Took it for a drive and the motor ran away on me. I caught it pretty quick and stalled the engine. Found that the thermostat did not open. It did get hot, but not in the red. No water in oil when I checked right away. Drove it home about a mile and it ran fine but now with coolant billowing out the pipe. Where do I start? Is it fair to suspect a head gasket or should I be thinking about a cracked head? Ive read that the oil cooler can dump water in the oil rather quickly. It has been leaking and the oil and water was mixed up very well if that means anything at all. I know i need to do a compression test, but that wont tell me everything.

I do need this truck up and running very soon so I have been looking at used motors. If it were only a head gasket, how do I go about flushing out the block? It looks like coolant is all over the front cover on the inside as the oil cap is covered in white as well as the injection pump gear cover(or whatever its called). I found another 7.3idi with newer reman heads from ford, new IP, clutch for $800. Considering the time crunch and that I need to have my heads checked out and trouble of changing head gaskets and cleaning out the engine, it could be much easier to just swap in a whole other motor. What say you?

For $800 if the other motor runs thats your best option given the time crunch.

buying the complete used engine will be a much faster plan then rebuilding yours. sounds like you lost a head gasket, but when mine did i had to resurface the block as well, and every little step is more time.
if you're swapping engines, you know exactly what you're getting into with no surprises.
