6.7 or 6.4 DIESEL or 5.4 or 6.2 GAS

I will be buying a superduty in the near future. (this year) 08+. I dont know which way i will be going gas or diesel at this time. Defiently 4x4. Money is not the issue. I currently own a 02 f150 V6 2WD and ready to upgrade due to some work im starting to get into. I am a college student right now working part time. Ive never owned a diesel but do know a little about them. I know how they run and glow plugs and all that stuff. The must I tow as of right now is some lawn equipment. Trailer weighing 1,000 and lawn mower at around 300 to 500lbs. Obviosly I dont "need" to have a diesel. But just always wanted one.

So here are my questions

1. Gas or Diesel?
2. Which engine is more reliable?
3. What is the MPG on each motor is you know?

Here goes another thread that will quickly become out of control.

Based on the first part of your post go with a gas truck. the 5.4 and 6.2 are very reliable engines that will last a long time with proper maintenance.

For what you are using it for a diesel is way overkill, thats my opinion.

Im going to sit back and enjoy the ride..

buy a gas 6.2 with 430 gears, plenty of power and decent mpg. not a 6.7s mpg but also not spending an extra $8400 for the diesel option.

Diesels cost more to have all that power, fuel filters every second/ third oil change. My 6.7 takes 13 quarts of oil so that's a little more. I get around 20mpgs on the highway though and diesel and gas prices are very close were I live, diesel was actually cheaper all last summer.

Gas would be better for you hands down, but diesels are fun, my tuned truck puts a smile on my face everything I mash the pedal.

It wasn't meant negatively but it usually winds up being taken way off subject.

The main thing is factor in costs, maintenance is generally 2x the cost with diesels since there is so much oil and coolant in the truck. The 6.7 and 6.4 are picky with filters and you generally need to stick with motorcraft.

Both motors gas or diesel will go 300,000 miles as long as they are maintained.

Have you considered an 08-10 V10 powered truck?

IMO, i think the V10 is really overkill, mpg would be bad i assume and not towing heavy equipment.

The V10 gets the same mpg as the 5.4 and the same as the 6.2 give or take 1 mpg.

If you think a V10 is overkill have you read the specs of the 6.7 and 6.4? The V10 does not come close to it in terms of torque and there is only a slight difference in HP.

If budget is not an issue then get a gas 6.2 truck, mine has 10,000 miles on it and I have towed my 24' enclosed race car trailer many times and I have had no issues with needing more power. My trailer is 11k lbs loaded. I get 11-13 mixed with winter driving and 12-14 with summer driving.

If it were me I'd go with the diesel, probably the 6.7. But that's just because I'm a huge diesel fanatic, and always wanted one, which I finally have now. But that's just me. Trust me I understand your want for a diesel. I love mine. Do I need it? Hell no! I'd be just as fine with a gas, but I sure do love having my diesel, that's just me.

Honestly for your needs, all you need is a gas truck. I would go with the 6.2. From what I've heard they are pretty reliable and have plenty of power. The 6.2 will fit your needs just fine.

But either way you have to get something that you like and will be happy with. That's what really matters, because both will fill your needs, but with the diesel you just have to realize and accept the higher costs involved with one.

I think you'll probably be happy with either one. Good luck with your decision.

The diesel will always have the higher resale value as well. Hows the 6.7? Any major problems that you have had?

You will get more off the sticker price with the diesel if your buying new, everyone brings up the sticker price for the 6.7 upgrade, but I sure know I've never paid sticker price for any vehicle.

Had mine over 2.5 years now, no issues with the 6.7

Whoops, sorry if my wording confused you, but I've got the good ole 7.3. Got it back in December. With that, have considered going with an older diesel, or do you just want something newer?

But I haven't really read anything bad about the 6.7 yet. It seems to be pretty reliable for the most, at least with none of the big issues like the 6.0 and some 6.4s had. I love the 6.0 but it definitely had its issues. I've heard some horror stories with the 6.4 too, but not quite as many as with the 6.0. Not a 100% sure on the 6.7 but like I said I haven't really heard anything too bad about it. But every engine has its issues, so don't let any of that scare you too much. I was just saying that if I had to chose, I would probably take the 6.7 over the 6.4.

If I didn't have such a short commute to work I would have gotten the 6.7 in my truck. I test drove a few before settling on a 6.2. The only major issues with the newer diesels is they don't hold up under short trips. The new diesels need to be driven up to temp and remain there for about 20-30 min because of the DPF and the large amount of oil and coolant the truck has to warm up. If you decide on a diesel just make sure you take it on a nice long drive once or twice a month. At times I miss my old 7.3 Excursion.
