Thumbs up Thinking of buying a F450 Utility Truck. Need Help...

Hey guys,
I am looking at a 2004 F450 XLT (11' Reading Utility) truck. 2 door, V10, Automatic with 225,000 miles. Guy is asking $6000. He says it is in good condition. I havent seen it yet, but I do like what I see so far...Not sure if it is worth the price and how much longer that V10 will go before needing to be pulled and rebuilt. I was also wondering what it would cost to rebuild that motor. Any help would be great. The sooner the better as I am looking to buy a truck for my business. Thanks

As long as it's been maintained the engine shouldn't be an issue for some time. The V10 is a strong engine. My friends shop services some of the older 99-04 SD box trucks and E series vans with V10's. Most of them have 250,000 hard miles on them and run great. U haul only cycles out vehicles by date and not mileage. There are a handful with over 300,000 miles he rents for in town use. Worst case being an engine replacement but used V10's are about 1,200.00. You should have at least another 75,000-100,000 miles in it

not to discredit anyone...but can someone post a link for the 1200 remanufactured engine. I've seen short bocks on ebay and elsewhere for in the 2400 area. In the NYC area I had an engine replacement done in 1999 on a ford windstar that costs me 4000 at a third party facility. couple years prior to that I had a transmission replaced on a caravan for 1200. in 2009 had a tranny replaced on a z-28 for 3600. In the NYC area it seems like larbor is almost as much as the costs of parts.

if the vehicle was in commercial service...consider it beat. if bought buy a wanna be trucker and driven to home depot on the weekends and all services were done on time...then I would continue to consider buying it.

you can check this forum for hub problems, steering box problems, clunk here, clunk there problems, growling noises in front and rear gearboxes, etc and figure you will probally run into the same issues.

so what am I saying.....price of car+maybe price of tranny+maybe price of engine=save your cash and buy something with half as much miles.

I was talking about used V10's from salvage yards. Around here complete 5.4's are around 850-900 and V10s range from 1,000-1500 depending on mileage and condition.

If the truck is in good shape and not too rusted out id buy it. The price seems right but see if you can get it a bit cheaper. The service box alone is probably worth 3k.

One thing I didn't see mentioned monroe is the 4r100 trans in that 04. If not gone thru already its about that time. The 05 and ups have the 5r110w which is supposedly one of the toughest transmission ford made. At 225k im sure even it would be ready to give up the ghost.

A 04 utility body with 225k for 6k would still be a good deal in my area. The modular motors if taken care of are 300k motors its the trans and the rest of the little stuff that gets you with that many miles.
