What Rear end on 2012 F350 PSD Dually
Been trying to find out.
I have a 2012 PSD F350 Dually Crew Cab Lariat. It is pretty much towing a 17k fifth wheel or its parked.
Was just in for 45k Service (severe duty) and the Ford Diesel Supplement says to change the Transfer fluid and rear end fluid if I have a Dana rear axle.
I could not find any info on the rear end that says what make axle it is. The drive shaft says Dana/Spicer but that is it.
So I go to the dealer today and he says it's not a Dana so it does not need a fluid change. So I ask "what make is it? And he couldn't definitively answer me. (I have an inquiring mind)
My understanding on my year and model is that its supposed to be either Dana or Sterling and both of them should say it?
Long story short he (Tech and Service Mgr) goes online to Ford with my VIN and all he could come up with was that I have a 3.73 rear…. Duh… I know that. Who makes it?
So they are trying a different route to find out for me - said it might take a few days to get back to me… not confident in that.
I spent hours this weekend trying to find out info to determine what it is but no luck.
Anyone have an idea as to how I can identify it?

Thanks for the info.
They said the rear was not a Dana nor a Sterling. I said as far as I knew it had to be one of the two and everything I knew said it was a Dana.
Frustrating when I know more than the tech. (and I know little)
Dealer did not do half the things on a 45k service that they were supposed to do.
This was the third dealer in my area I've been to where they just don't seem to have their sh__t together. Now I have to look for a 4th.

I usually do a lot of the small stuff (filters, oil changes etc), but like a fool I was talked into the pre-paid maintenance when I bought the truck. I've only used 4 of the 8 visits so most is going to go unused.
I figured for the bigger visits I'd let a "pro" do the work so it gets done right. I always need to spend time trying to figure out how to do the next job. What fluid to use, how do I drain the transfer case for instance… what new tool do I need? Sometimes theres just not the time to do it all when it needs to be done.
Just got a call from the Dealer…. Guess what? It has a Dana. I told him that it's really disappointing that I (a dumb consumer) seems to always have the answer for the tech.
I know that there are Ford Techs out there who know their stuff. It just hard to find them sometimes and in my area even harder. I've been to dealers in Idaho and California where diesels rule and it seemed as if they really knew the truck. Here in the southeast though… have not had much luck.
This is the 4th time now at a dealership where I've gotten info off of the net or this forum and had to correct something that was done wrong. So its time to look for dealer number 4.

As for the techs, I've generally found a ton of great techs in every dealership I've used over the years. While I'm sure there are some that aren't so great, I believe most of them are well trained and very capable mechanics. The biggest challenge I've found is dealing with the service advisors and / or managers, which is another issue all on its own.
