Tuning - tweaking "timing adder" to lower cold start smoke?
#91
I'd have to call Cody, he'd want me to first PM an affidavit that you'd need to initial and sign, then I'd have to PM the data to you, and you'd have to keep it a secret.
OR... I could say a long PW with low ICP can give the same fueling as high ICP and low PW... but the effects are not the same when cold. Cold fuel burns slow... so you don't want to throw it all in there in a pile and wait for the burn (hard and fast). You also don't want low atomization (soft and slow). There is a "secret formula" to getting ICP and FIPW right to reduce/eliminate cold-engine smoke. Some injectors can't get much cleaner than a haze when cold, and other injectors are just pigs in the cold - stinkin' up the place every winter morning.
The stock and 30% nozzles will clean up real nice when tuned right... but sometimes the good folks in Georgia and Texas have to work harder at it, from their downright balmy environments. Cody lives in these sub-arctic temps, and he's had 160/100s (same as mine) in his personal vehicle... so you can understand why he'd be a bit tight-lipped with his techniques.

For some strange reason, I thought you opted out of that. I'm trying to reach him on another matter, I'll drop the request in his ear. He's a busy guy.

Tried Dave's new tune. He adjusted the SOI timing. No difference in smoke - still a stinky chimney. This is the stuff that gives diesels a bad name, and I don't want to be that guy.

While WhiteBuffalo Rich and I start at around the same ICP, his comes down much quicker, as does his ICP DC. By the time Rich's EOT is at 46 degrees, his MFD is down to 10mg, and at 67 degrees, his MFD is at 8.38mg.
My tunes are pushing way more fuel than his, and doing it with a much lower FIPW.

I'm in the same boat Dave - I know less than zero % about tuning.
But, here is my idea.......
I like Swamps - Dave, Jonathan & the whole crew. Good folks to me whenever I call or order something.
But maybe you should give Tony or Matt a call and order a tune. You have the Hydra so they can e-mail it to you just like Dave is. For $30-40 you can put this tuning & smoking issue to rest rather quickly - if it is tuning. Not that this has been a waste of time or anything - you've covered a lot of bases, got your truck running good and we've all learned something along the way.
If it's not tuning then you have another tune to play with - you've got room for 15
When I spoke to Luke Cline last week he told me he has run some setups with 160/100 nozzles, 160/30 nozzles, etc.. with Tony's & Matt's tunes and they don't smoke any more than a stock setup. So 175's with stock nozzles shouldn't be an issue either.
We still need to compare readings from each of our MAP sensors so we can put that to rest as well. Give me a call, now that it's snowing again I put the F-250 in the garage so I can do it without freezing my tail off.....
