2013 F150 brake shudder

My 2013 Lariat has just over 7,000 miles on it now. If you brake lightly at 55-60 you get a brake shutter, enough to feel it in the seat of your pants but also can see the steering wheel shake too. if you brake a little harder you don't feel the shudder much. is it possible to warp rotors in 7000 miles? 3500 of that 7000 was put on driving to Texas and back.

Brake shudder isn't just caused by warped rotors. It can also be caused by thickness variation, uneven pad transfer to the rotor surface, rust spots from sitting in salty or humid weather, hard spots in the rotor.....

But, yes, you can warp rotors in a few dozen miles, let alone 7k.

The rotors on my 2011 were turned under warranty at about 25K. They started to shudder at about 20K. So yes, given my opinion of Ford's OE brake systems, I find it more than possible for them to need a good turning after 7K.

Just had my 2013 XLT in for the second time for a slight grind in the last ten feet of a stop. They turned the rotors and resurfaced the pads on the front the first visit and did the rear on the second visit. Service manager said the next time I will get new rotors and pads and he was very nice about it. Don't know why Ford cant provide quality brake components on their trucks.

If I could ever find the time to get by the dealer I would drop it off. My work schedule is crazy. Go in at 7:30 get off at 6:30, sometimes 7. Just no time!

I've had my front rotors turned twice under warranty(currently 8k miles on the truck) due to the same issue. My service tech said it's due to the pads. They'll keep turning the rotors until they need replaced.

Have you ben driving "aggressively" prior to this, or getting the brakes really hot pulling a heavy trailer up and down hills? I boiled my brakes pretty early on my 2011, completely my fault though. Yes it's possible to warp a rotor that early. I had the rotors turned and pads replaced, the pads were actually developing cracks. I suggest upgrading your brake rotors if you have an aggressive driving style, EBC makes some outstanding rotors and aren't too expensive, as I'm sure there are other aftermarket manufacturers with a product as good.

This truck hasn't had a trailer hooked up to it yet. I don't think I drive my truck aggressively, I'm usually slowing down a good ways before I get to where I'm stopping. Only had one 'panic' stop but they were already doing it at that point point. On the way home yesterday I had a chance to do a couple hard stops, like you would if you were bedding new pads and rotors. Fairly heavy braking from 50 or so down to 10 and let the truck roll, never coming to a complete stop while the brakes are really hot. After 2 hard brakes it stops smoothly again.

After reading several posts, there seems to be an issue with the brakes, Mine personally was my fault , so. I've went ahead and changed the front pads and rotors with some slotted / drilled rotors and semi ceramic pads, no issues since. Minimal brake dust now also. I haven't done anything with the rear brakes as of yet. You can't begin to believe the difference the new setup makes.

As someone who has a complete set of EBC rotors and YellowStuff pads, who encountered rotor warpage within 10K, I would have to say... look elsewhere.

I too had to turn my rotors twice before the warranty ran out I than bought drilled and slotted rotors it didn't help so I had the original rotors turned a third time and purchased Pep Boys OEM pads, 45K and no more issues.

The overwhelming majority of brake system issues have to do with how the truck is driven. It's not that they use cheap components, just that even the best components will have issues if used hard.

-Warped- Brake Disc and Other Myths

I believe I've towed heavier than most anyone on here with my F150, and my brakes are working just as good as the day I bought it.

I have to agree, at least in my personal experience. I was completely the caused of my rotors warping. However dumb this may sound, I didn't even ask the dealer to turn the rotors and relace the pads under warranty, I can't expect Ford, or anyone else for that matter to pay for my screw ups. They did however perform the service and wouldn't take the money even though I informed the service manager I knew I was the cause. Anyway, I went ahead and upgraded the rotors and pads, and changed my driving habits a bit and haven't had any further issues. I can't speak for anyone else though, but certainly for me, total human error on my part.
