5W20 or 5W30 and Filter ? for 6.2L

Hi Everyone-

The owners manual for my 2014 F350 6.2L V8 gasser calls for 5W30 oil and the filler cap is labeled 5W20 oil. The dealer pulled my VIN and Ford says 5W20 oil. I guess it must just be a mistake/typo in the owners manual? Anyone have any insight into this? What is the correct weight for sure?

The manual also calls for a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter. This is my first oil change for this truck and the original oil filter that I just pulled off has no identification numbers and looks to be made by a different manufacturer as it is not made the same as the Motorcraft FL-820S that I just bought. Why the difference?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Motorcraft Syn Blend 5W20 for the oil. Motorcraft FL-820S for the filter. Local Walmart generally has it in stock. Remember you will need a total of 7 Quarts of oil. Check Groupon or see of the dealership has a oil change special. Many times these deals workout to be even or cheaper in cost then you doing it yourself. My local Ford dealer is usually 25 bucks for my truck which is the cost of the filter and oil. It's a toss up for me at least.

Good luck.

I had the same question for my service manager. He indicated that it is in fact 5W20 that is required and that the manual is incorrect for the 6.2 liter gas motor. Also of note, if you are located in Canada then the Motorcraft 5W20 oil is not a semi-synthetic oil but a mineral based oil. I have been told this by 2 different dealers up here. If someone has any different info on this please feel free to chime in.

The Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend oil we have here in the U.S. is a Group III oil, which is mineral based - fractionally distilled and hydrocracked petroleum.

If I were in the Great White North I would use the Canadian Motorcraft oil and not lose a moment's sleep about it - if it meets Ford's specs then it meets Ford's specs.

this has been discussed before. If you go to the Ford website you can download an updated copy of your owners manual with the corrections in it.

5W-20 is correct.

Thanks for all the feedback! It's amazing, my manual was printed in late 2013 and it still has the misprint. Just wanted to verify the proper viscosity just to cover all the bases if a engine warranty issue comes up. Good to go!

I am with the NJFordman. My local dealer charges 19.95 for the oil and filter on my F250.

His sign says come one come all.

I took the wife's toyota in there the other day for 19.95.
