Carb question for those who know more than I do.

Hi, still on the subject of my 1970 F250 2WD auto with a 302.

Yesterday, I got myself an Edlebrock 289 Performer intake, and am wondering if this carb would be a good match for it, also, would be my first Holley, and I hear they are pretty easy to rebuild and work on.

Not doing a lot to the engine for right now, just intake and carb, although next weekend my local scrapyard is having a 50% off sale, and I may go get the engine this intake came off of, a 302 from a 1974 Ford van. If I get it, I will take my time and rebuild it, and this carb and intake will eventually go on it as well.

So, basically trying to find out if this would be a good "learning" carb, of if it is one where I would be starting out out of my league.

Here is the carb..this one of course is new, I will be getting a used one from a friend.

Thanks

Yep.. that'd be a good one. Personally, I like the Autolite 4100.

Btw, a "305"? Some might give ya a weird look cuz that's a GM engine. Just refer to it as a 302 (Windsor), regardless if it is overbored, so no one gets confused.

Lol, people should give me an odd look if, by this time in life, I can't tell the difference between a 5 and a 2 when I am typing. Thanks for catching the typo, and thanks for the opinion on the carb, I am going to go grab it now.

The 80457 is a good start but needs to be tweaked for a stock 302 2V motor.
1.it comes with #64 main jets which are too fat(rich). Put some #62's in there (2).
2..031 pump nozzle which also too much fuel. If your re-build kit comes with a .028 I'd use that.
3.it comes with a black coded secondary diaphragm spring. This is Holley's strongest one so your engine will never see 1/2 of the secondaries. I'd put in a long yellow one. If your 2V motor bogs with this spring change to the purple one.
4.it comes with a #39 secondary metering plate which is also too fat. It's equivalent to #69 jets. I'd get a #9.
I suggest buying the following:
a)Part Number 20-13 secondary diaphragm spring kit.
b)20-59 Quick Change secondary diaphragm housing cover kit.
c)134-9 secondary metering plate.
d)122-63 #62 jets
**************************
Notes. The secondary metering plates are held on with special screws which take a special tool. USUALLY these can be removed with a small blade screwdriver if they aren't too tight. On the side of the carb there is a fuel tranfer tube from front to back bowls that have o-rings on each end. There is a secret on how to easily mount this when putting your carb back together. Let me know when you are at that point and I'll explain it.

Already ordered from Summit.

Well I didn't add the main carb rebuilding kit. I didn't know if you were going to buy a local parts store brand one or not.

Is there not a kit with everything in it, like, ordering 1 part number instead of 5 "mini" kits?

There is one that would come with the spring kit I mentioned above but not the other three. It would also have different nozzles. Holley Trick Kit is number 37-933.

Can you return it? For the money you can get a MUCH MUCH MUUUUUCH better holley based carb from quick fuel that won't need so much work/parts after the fact.

For the money? I paid $20 for the carb, under $100 for the parts.

The one you linked is is over $300.

Even with "new" math, that is not less

Sorry, I see the confusion...I linked to a new carb...the one I bought had no way to link to it....did not buy it new, bought it on the cheap from a friend, thus all the rebuilding parts.

Under those circumstances, what you linked would have been better, yes.

Jeff, ordered all 5 kits, should be here next week. In the meantime, should I give this carb a bath, or any such stuff?

Thanks, all good thoughts, suggestions and ideas. I will be sure to take many pictures, have already bought a box of 500 resealable baggies and have a decent sized "bathtub" for it, about 14" x 18" x 6" deep, with a homemade fine weave basket for easily picking parts out.
