'78 460 CARB Recommendations????
Guys.......
On my F-150 460 C6, the previous owner ditched the original carb for an Edelbrock 1407 series ........I have to be honest, I've had 2 of these Eddy's previously on small block Mopars, and I have grown to HATE them for a number of reasons.
With that said, this one has been a chronic headache. I'm thinking of moving to a Holley (maybe), and I want one with relatively small primaries for puttin' around the village down here.....I tow very little, and when I do it's less than 2500 lbs........I don't care about raw power, or burning the tires off the rims (which this truck will do if I'm not easy on it)........I just want a RELIABLE well built carb, that will give me decent mileage (and I know that's subjective with a 460), and not be prone to running rich or giving me constant general headaches.
Can anyone, from your own experience, recommend a nice all-around carb for the late 70's 460.........?

I am using a road demon 725 with electric choke, I jetted down a couple sizes on both primaries and secondaries. Since I can't keep my foot out of it I get 7 or 8 mpg. I think that with some more fine tuning I might be able to get 10. If I ever try something else it will be a holley truck avenger or 4150 or fuel injection.
The things I do not like about the demon is the choke linkage can easily interfere with the air cleaner and there is no choke pull off but it seems to work fine if you give it a minute or 2 to warm up. Seems to be a great carb.

I have had a Holley 600 cfm list 9834 (4160) on my 460 for over 20 years. Electric choke, cruise control, a/t downshift linkage all fit as they should. I did swap out the front float bowl to allow the stock steel fuel line to be used.
As I remember I bumped the main jets to 66 or 67 a number of years back.
I had run a Holley 750 cfm list 3310 prior to the 9834. I did notice a significant loss of power with the change to the 600, but had a corresponding increase in mileage.
My truck is a '78 F-250 Scab 4x4 with a C6 and 4.10's. The 460 is out of a '79. It has a mild cam and some head work, mainly on the exhaust side.
Running loaded from Portland, Oregon to Missoula, Montana, with the 600, I would get 9.5-10.0 mpg. Running empty around town I get 9.5-10.0 mpg. Kinda like the 360 in my '68 F-250...

I have a stock 75 460 that was running terrible, rear half of the stock 4350 was seized up, got a good deal on a 750 edelbrock (1411) for $80 rebuilt it and slapped it in, getting 10mpg out of f350 now, purrs like a kitten up here in canada. I have the 4350 if you want it, will need a rebuild, send me an im if interested

I'm running a 750 Holley on my 76 F250 4x4, the engine is a 69 429 stroked to a 460. It was running Elderbrock 600 when I got the truck; it pinged so bad it blow holes in the #1 and #6 pistons. After the rebuild I put on a 650 Holley duel feed double pumper and she would still ping a little. So I went with the 750 Holley with vacuum secondaries. It runs so much better with the 750 and the MPG is better also; not much better but with that size of engine; anything is good.
