Low Pressure Pump failure questions

Got a P0087 and P0232 today at around 119K miles and less than 1K on a new set of filters. Replaced them anyway, no trash in the engine bowl both filters looked good. After returning to stock and then reinstalling H&S tune there must have been enough time to get 3 seconds worth of diesel into the top bowl and that is how long the engine ran. The P232 is a no start CEL I guess to save the system. Anyway from researching it looks like I can get an Airtex pump only and put it in my stock housing or pay another $150 for a complete unit. Rockauto has 1 Carter pump left.

What is the best way to go here? I'm leaning towards a complete housing which will take longer to get here, not going to be fun being down a truck for most of the week. Really hoping the HPFP isn't gone or about to go. Never had water issues either from the light or any of notice come out of the drain but the truck did have 70K miles before I had it that I know nothing about.

Any luck, what did you come up with, keep us informed. I for one would like to know about the non OEM filtering systems, not a great deal of write ups on them.

You can replace just the pump in the stock housing its easy to do and it will save you some cash. I have done a few for other people. Just another thought is your tuner updated to the latest flash? I seem to recall a update for just this issue from H&S. have you check to see if you have fuel in the system, there is a Schrader valve on the fuel cooler that you can check to see if your getting fuel turn on the key and push it in you should have fuel there. Hope its not your HPFP. keep us posted.

I went with the complete OE housing ($320 delivered), even comes with a filter. Surprisingly easy to remove IF the damn lines come apart, have one that is sticking. Looked like the cheapest aftermarket would be $600+ and would have to mess with some lines. I like the idea of an easier way to replace the filter though.

I ended up dropping the driveline to give more access. I am probably behind on the flashes but did return to stock and still had no fuel pump coming on so pretty sure I eliminated that. The upper bowl was maybe 1/4 full of fuel both when I replaced the filter the first time and after the key was cycled and on for probably 20-30 minutes (returning to stock and retuning), from memory it should have had a lot more fuel in it if the primary pump was working.

If you had a lift and power washed the whole area before hand this would probably be a 30 minute job. It is a blast laying on your back knocking mud in your eye every minute otherwise.

Well got the new one in and all is well again. The old housing was remarkably clean, probably no more junk in the whole thing than the tip of my pinky and that was all in the lower water trap part. Probably all the crap that gets in there from changing the filter. Pulled the old pump and it had some very small particles in the outer part.

I might start dropping the front driveshaft every time I change the filter, it really opens up the room and takes about a minute to drop out.
