Tire size help for a lifted Ex
I'm in the process of purchasing another Excursion, I currently have a 2wd PSD Ex, I'm looking at buying a 4wd V10 Ex.
The truck I'm considering purchasing is lifted 5" with stock size tires. My original thought was to remove the lift and go back to stock height. After thinking about it, I would like to keep the lift and run oversize tires.
With all of the tire size choices, I'm at a quandary as to what size tires and wheels to purchase. I'm on a limited budget and cannot afford to go through different size tires/wheels to figure out what works the best.
The truck will be used for my wife to drag the kids around in, tow our 5k gvw travel trailer and do some light off roading with. We will also use it for an occasional cross country road trip. I'm thinking I would like to keep the tire size around the 33-34" range. I'm seeing tires for 16" to 20" wheels in this size range. What size tire/wheel combo will work best for my application and give me a good choice of all terrain oriented tires? In the end, I'm more concerned about on road manners vs off road while still keeping the truck comfortable to tow with.

I don't tow over an occasional 5k lbs. it feels great, no issues at all. Quiet on the highway at all speeds, just couldn't tell you about snow and ice cause I haven't been up north yet with this setup.

This is our Ex with 35"s on 18" rims, front is lifted 4" and rear is at 4.5". Tires are Nitto Dura Grapplers (Highway tread) in 305/70R18E.
These are the quietest tires I have ever had on a truck and they tow very well also, our TT is 10k+ with 1400lb tongue weight, the tires run and track dead steady loaded and solo. I don't imagine they would be very good off-road, I don't go there or drive it in the snow/salt so no feedback on those surfaces.

keep in mind that I have 4 children. Age 10yrs, 2 @ 5yrs, and a 3yr old. Wife is 5'4" tall
my X is lifted 3" and running 315/75/16 tires...which = 35" rubber
all of my kids and my wife can get in and out of the X just fine with no problems. The 3yr old has to climb the running boards if we let him do it himself. But the older kids and wife just step right in.
it doesn't sound significant...but trust me that you don't want to go too high.
as far as driveability, I have the V-10 with 4.30 gears. My X moves along pretty easily with no need to put the pedal down. I find that I rarely if ever break 3000 RPM driving around town and keeping with the flow of traffic. At 60mph she is turning about 1800 RPM's. I don't tow, so no reports on that front unfortunately. I have no power problems IMO

3" custom lift
35" tires
and FYI, if you go too tall, you will hear nothing but complaining by the kids and the wife. here is my old truck on 35's. it got real old, real quick listening to them complain about getting into and out of the truck35" tires
4.5" lift
35" tires
it's not easy to see the height difference, but trust me it's there. My wife has yet to complain about the X height. I actually mentioned dropping the lift down to 1" (leveled) and running 33's and she said no way, keep it the way it is.

315/75R16's, essentially 35x12.50's on 4-4.5" lift (CT V and 2" hanger/modded B)
Rig doesn't even know they're there, even before the tuner. Cruising highway at 70mph and 16-1700 rpm, does damn good on fuel (7.3 PSD). Haven't re-geared it, don't intend to either - mostly the family road trip vehicle, occasionally tows the Chevelle (with trailer, maybe 6800lbs) like a champ.

Gotta go with 35's. I have BF Goodrich TA KO2's wrapped on 16 x 10 rims and their super quiet. Beautiful tires and super tough even for off roaring but on the highway, super quiet. I don't regret my purchase at all. In total only spent like $1,600
